I so clearly remember Karen singing and dancing in her livingroom, belting out "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head," and "Downtown!" She was so loving and happy.<br /><br />It wasn't until I grew older that I even realized Karen had special needs. I could write a whole book on the truth of being young and innocent, and the parallel of God's love. I will always have a huge heart for kids with Down Syndrome. Karen went to heaven at an early age due a heart defect related to her Down Syndrome, but I was so privileged to be a part of her life. This poster made me think of my childhood friend. Since school is back in I’ll be going back to my posting schedule of four posts a week – at least most of the time. :) Some weeks get crazy but for the most part you’ll see one more post a week again. </p> <p>I know, calm down. Awesome. </p> <p>I should have really talked about this earlier this summer but the months just got away from me. I did want to mention it so you can prepare for next year if you are interested in gardening. </p> <p>Thing is, we used to have way more of a backyard, but even then it was kind of odd, with a big slope. So we didn’t have a great spot to put a large garden. When I blogged about my desire to grow a garden <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2010/03/how-does-your-garden-grow.html">years ago</a>, many of you were so helpful and I learned a<strong> ton</strong>. </p> <p>So a few years ago I started a small garden – I used the square foot gardening technique – loosely. I say loosely because I didn’t segment the garden out like a true square foot garden. I just kind of planted stuff in there and hoped it would do well. </p> <p>And it did. :) That’s when I learned that you don’t have to have a large, perfect spot to make food grow. It needs water and light and the space doesn’t matter as much, in my opinion. </p> <p>Since then we had the <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/search/label/deck%20and%20patio">patio</a> put in so a couple years ago I moved the garden to the only good spot we had left – right next to our air conditioner: </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-xub7PEcO-oc/UhYVTti5e9I/AAAAAAAAfug/xD9f_96oXcs/s1600-h/square-foot-garden%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="square foot garden" border="0" alt="square foot garden" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-vrVLevgmTS8/UhYVUs7U5YI/AAAAAAAAfuo/CcN3iTbXwu4/square-foot-garden_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="751" /></a></p> <p>It wasn’t ideal and I didn’t know how everything would do. Before this everything had been in full sun. This area gets morning and some afternoon sun, but not the super hot late afternoon sun and it’s actually done really well. </p> <p>I could have DIY'd the garden set up, but it comes in a kit at most hardware stores and it was super easy to put together: </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Y1ZBIphigFw/UhYVVBYArJI/AAAAAAAAfuw/NJW3RXv20pk/s1600-h/square-foot-gardening%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="square foot gardening" border="0" alt="square foot gardening" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/--pEe8MGLb9o/UhYVV5qqkuI/AAAAAAAAfu4/cvZm_VEt1bc/square-foot-gardening_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="751" /></a></p> <p>I have taken it apart and put it away for the winter and I’ve left it out – it’s cedar so it holds up fine to the elements – at least for the next few years. </p> <p>We back up to land with woods and a creek so we get a lot of wildlife. TONS of bunnies. Because of that I knew I wanted something to deter them from eating everything and I use that lattice stuff. I found it in the dumpster at hubby’s high school years ago. (I didn’t DIVE in the dumpster – just picked it up off the top.) ;) And I’m kind of surprised but it works great. They don’t nibble on anything. I actually think having it by the air conditioner may help too – the noise maybe? </p> <p>So there’s some things I’ve learned over the past years that I thought I would share. I’m not an expert by any stretch but I’m learning more every season. </p> <p>I planted a strawberry plant and blueberry bushes years ago – blueberry bushes need to be planted in multiples because they cross-pollinate. But the bushes didn’t do well – we needed to move them and never replanted them. Each one only produced a few blueberries total. Now I know I should have been more patient -- I think they just needed a few years to get established. I mean, we have a farm nearby that we pick blueberries at that has hundreds of big blueberry bushes, so I know they can do well. </p> <p>And the strawberries are one of those I think I’ll just keep going to pick somewhere else: </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-XxRkkBHx2NY/UhYVWfUEyAI/AAAAAAAAfvA/APPqNqTQxx0/s1600-h/strawberry-plant%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="strawberry plant in garden" border="0" alt="strawberry plant in garden" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-6khD_n0NnI8/UhYVXCkFWGI/AAAAAAAAfvI/1FC8ilJmIHs/strawberry-plant_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="400" height="601" /></a></p> <p>By this time of year the plant is big and kind of sprouting out – I didn’t realize strawberry plants did that. It shoots off and plants itself in another spot, so I think in a warmer climate it would kind of take over. But for years now it’s only produced maybe a handful of strawberries each year. I know that would increase over time too, but I’d rather use the space for something else. </p> <p>I like my garden foods like I like my flowering plants – producing all season instead of once. Strawberries produce for one month and then they’re done. I’d rather have more room for my beloved cukes: </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-ZikZYeiT6gU/UhYVX-vy24I/AAAAAAAAfvQ/zSmoXAZcKeE/s1600-h/cucumber-in-garden%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="growing cucumbers" border="0" alt="growing cucumbers" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-S1gaKG_h7Dc/UhYVYX87sHI/AAAAAAAAfvY/spNH1I6fFvM/cucumber-in-garden_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="400" height="601" /></a></p> <p>Isn’t that funky? I don’t know what kind I got this year but they are long and skinny. I prefer a chunkier cucumber but these still taste great. A few folks warned me years ago about the cucumbers – they said they would take over the garden and they are right. :) But I love my cukes so I insisted on having them. Thing is, they are vine plant, so yes, they do go everywhere, but they don’t hurt anything. At least in my experience – they mix in with the tomatoes and stuff but not too bad. </p> <p>I lean some of the lattice up against the house so they can work into that, but they prefer to stay low. It’s kind of cool to see how they grab on to stuff: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-m9oL1LCH1jQ/UhYVZOfusaI/AAAAAAAAfvg/v5RmhsRI_hI/s1600-h/IMG_6294%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="cucumber vine" border="0" alt="cucumber vine" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Z0eMpZHD7rg/UhYVZ7LlVaI/AAAAAAAAfvo/w_iFeySWnkM/IMG_6294_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="400" height="601" /></a></p> <p>They do pretty well in this spot but I think they prefer full sun. My first year growing them it was out. of. control. there were so many. It was awesome. :) Then the first year I planted them on this side of the house I didn’t get <em>one</em> cucumber – but it was a super hot summer and it turns out it had something to do with the bee population. Crazy, but they weren’t being pollinated by the bees so they never produced. </p> <p>This year they are doing much better, just not producing a ton like that first year. I don’t know if it’s having less sun or just the version I got. </p> <p>My other favorite garden plant is tomatoes. This year I did three versions – regular tomatoes, romas and cherry: </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-CS3nakiXOak/UhYVajZJS2I/AAAAAAAAfvw/XFP9GpGx_H0/s1600-h/cherry-tomatoes-garden%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="growing cherry tomatoes" border="0" alt="growing cherry tomatoes" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-WuHXe4OfZmU/UhYVbBnlmLI/AAAAAAAAfv4/Z33p2-HT2WI/cherry-tomatoes-garden_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="676" /></a></p> <p>The cherries always do well for me and this year they are mad crazy good. Like, I can’t even keep up. But I use them all the time – salads, in my eggs, for caprese salad…I love them. </p> <p>The romas are doing incredible too – they just started maturing a couple weeks ago and they are coming so fast I can’t keep up: </p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-pAkKC4SVsak/UhYVbhdrwaI/AAAAAAAAfwA/yAbZ1xPc6Ao/s1600-h/roma-tomatoes-garden%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="growing roma tomatoes" border="0" alt="growing roma tomatoes" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-9e_rQ_00nOU/UhYVccL8fqI/AAAAAAAAfwE/qoJMFy2nrAM/roma-tomatoes-garden_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="290" height="436" /></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-slrxTmDKdeY/UhYVc2MhmoI/AAAAAAAAfwQ/jqh-NxM8PL8/s1600-h/roma-tomato-plant%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="roma tomato plant" border="0" alt="roma tomato plant" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-yAnSL0D419c/UhYVdRxQrlI/AAAAAAAAfwY/VF_nKY-Rt_8/roma-tomato-plant_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="290" height="436" /></a></p> <p>My only disappointment this year is my regular tomatoes – I got a container plant this year to try to fit more into the garden and I should have just done a regular plant. I got two little bitty tomatoes off of that all season. There aren’t even anymore coming – kind of a bust. Next year I’ll just go with a regular plant. </p> <p>There are seasons to what you plant too – early summer crops and late summer. If you love lettuce you’ll want to grow that early. It does better in the less intense heat of the early summer months. I’ve done a few different lettuce varieties and they all do well – almost too well. When they start to mature they do so fast so it’s kind of hard to keep up. </p> <p>I planted three arugula plants this year and with all of the rain we got in May and June they exploded – I didn’t even get that much off of them because they went to seed <em>so fast</em>. (That means they grew flowers, which often will change the taste and make them bitter. Same goes for many herbs like basil.)</p> <p>Some of the late summer bloomers are melons – this year I couldn’t find any watermelon so I went with cantaloupe: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Qk0xTDCvbEQ/UhYVeBr-OzI/AAAAAAAAfwg/R9x162rK_00/s1600-h/cantaloupe-garden%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="growing cantaloupe" border="0" alt="growing cantaloupe" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-33XovDIzuhU/UhYVemJxDII/AAAAAAAAfwo/zlU6yqV43p4/cantaloupe-garden_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="676" /></a></p> <p>I looked for weeks to see something and finally a few weeks ago this showed up. Man, these are sloooooow. It hasn’t grown much in the past week or so. But I’ll keep an eye on it – I’m not sure it’s going to get much bigger really. :) </p> <p>In my little garden (I think it’s about four by four feet?) I’ve had ten plants growing this summer. As I mentioned, the arugula is now gone but everything else is still there. This year I planted my herbs in a smaller container by the back door so I’d have more room here. I do have my rosemary planted in the bigger garden though, and even with the cucumber vines all around, it does great. </p> <p>A few years ago I picked up <a href="http://www.amazon.com/All-New-Square-Foot-Gardening/dp/1591862027">this book</a> after many readers recommended it to me: </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-A4zYHGuPFTI/UhYVfRCeXqI/AAAAAAAAfww/dWtHnFKd_2I/s1600-h/Square_Foot_Gardening_Book_Cover%25255B6%25255D.png"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="square foot gardening book" border="0" alt="square foot gardening book" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-o5p-QUNh9jc/UhYVgYifkAI/AAAAAAAAfw4/8kNCKHASTok/Square_Foot_Gardening_Book_Cover_thumb%25255B4%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="400" height="574" /></a></p> <p>If you are new to gardening it is a wealth of information! Before I heard of this method I thought I needed a huge spot to grow my own food, but it’s so not the case. Many plants you can grow in containers too and they will do really well (tomatoes, strawberries, herbs), so space shouldn’t hold you back! My garden isn’t pretty, but it produces. That’s what matters! </p> <p>As far as keeping them alive – just water them when they look hot and wilted. Other than watering I don’t do any upkeep with my garden at all. I don’t even mulch which I probably should. Pretty low key, just how I like it! </p> <p>Do you garden? Do you use the square foot technique? What’s your favorite thing to grow? </p>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781209617172261323noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6566801726647592784.post-29924156253009315982013-11-09T02:35:00.000-08:002013-11-09T02:35:00.521-08:00Outside mount bamboo shades<p>Hello hello! I’m back today to share a quick DIY project and a couple new tools I’ve started using lately. It’s been Christmas decor 24/7 around here and I gotta be honest, it was great to get something off the DIY list and use a tool for a change. (Insert tool man (woman?) grunt here.)</p> <p>If you’ve read for a while you know I’m a lover of bamboo shades. Over the years I’ve switched over from our blinds to the bamboo and I just love them. I think they offer more privacy and light filtering (depending on the kind you get), they let more light in (when you want it) and they are just <em>pretty</em>. :) I told you more about our bamboo shades <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2010/08/bamboo-or-blinds.html" target="_blank">here</a>. </p> <p>I mentioned the privacy/light thing, and there are some that are a lot more tightly weaved than others. I recently replaced a couple on our main level that weren’t as tightly woven (less privacy) so I had one of the old ones available to install in our guest room upstairs: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-HLzI_OSkV6w/UNM67SwI8YI/AAAAAAAAZW4/TCDX4QB5_3k/s1600-h/IMG_4099%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><font color="#4c4c4c"></font><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-74nsRxddb5Y/UNM672RETUI/AAAAAAAAZXA/Md33CMUtClA/IMG_4099_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="320" height="480" /></a></p> <p>This window has been nekked forever and I always feel bad for our guests who sleep in here. This is easily the brightest room in our house – which I’m sure is just lovely first thing in the morning for those who sleep in here. :)</p> <p>And yes, the walls are <em>still</em> blue, pink and purple. At least there’s a bed in here, <em>OK</em>? </p> <p>Because this shade is 72 inches long, for our longer, main level windows, it’s way too long for the upstairs window, which is shorter. This allowed me to do one of my new favorite fixes – hang the shade outside the window instead of inside the window frame. </p> <p>I gathered my tools: </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-yLdVtEqjVAs/UNM68SYLXBI/AAAAAAAAZXI/8I2ywxXzvzc/s1600-h/IMG_4097%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="hanging bamboo blinds" border="0" alt="hanging bamboo blinds" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-G9Sic_IlwWU/UNM682I5tjI/AAAAAAAAZXQ/OjRkwZ7sF3Y/IMG_4097_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="400" height="290" /></a></p> <p>I did end up needing a drill too, more on that in a bit. If you install a shade inside your window frame, you probably won’t need any anchors – just screws. The framing around the window is enough for the screws to bite into. </p> <p>And if you decide to do an outside mount, like this one, if you go right above the window you’ll probably catch something. Because my shade is so long, I went way up, and luckily caught a stud up near the ceiling: </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ai4Tx-1Bs1w/UNM69KcmS8I/AAAAAAAAZXY/AaAso9vTTMc/s1600-h/IMG_4101%25255B10%25255D.jpg"><font color="#4c4c4c"></font><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="hanging bamboo blinds" border="0" alt="hanging bamboo blinds" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-IFBzQGknCWA/UNM69kdGUlI/AAAAAAAAZXg/Qjk8Z7fQwFk/IMG_4101_thumb%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="320" height="480" /></a></p> <p>I used my stud finder to find out where my studs were. Just for fun, stick one on your husband and let it beep. Hilarious. ;)</p> <p>Once I knew where I could safely hang the brackets (without them eventually crashing down), I marked where the holes needed to go: </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-wkefCVuj3C0/UNM690AYmvI/AAAAAAAAZXo/GjJMxp-YR3w/s1600-h/IMG_4110%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="hanging bamboo blinds" border="0" alt="hanging bamboo blinds" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-a-Sl-vyEgQY/UNM6-UqgoyI/AAAAAAAAZXw/WjBxJUfTi0c/IMG_4110_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="400" height="482" /></a></p> <p>If you like to have extra peace of mind, you can put all four screws in. Anymore I only do two or three and they hold up fine. </p> <p>You’ll want to drill in with a bit to give yourself a good start for your screw: </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-8qfEHXdrC5U/UNM6-tmaopI/AAAAAAAAZX4/QXUQnFshrok/s1600-h/IMG_4111%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="hanging bamboo blinds" border="0" alt="hanging bamboo blinds" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-VlDTVRRbSlk/UNM6_FOsERI/AAAAAAAAZYA/xGmLzJstw8Y/IMG_4111_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="306" height="480" /></a></p> <p>This also helps to determine if you’ve hit a stud or not. If the bit goes right through the drywall, you’ve missed the stud and will need an anchor. If not you’ll feel the resistance of the wood as you drill. </p> <p>Here’s where my first new “tool” comes in – I found this at my True Value months ago and I LOVE IT: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-9GGsly49kcY/UNM7AYVwP1I/AAAAAAAAZYI/x8EKN-wUY4o/s1600-h/IMG_4104%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="hanging bamboo blinds" border="0" alt="hanging bamboo blinds" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Z4u7JToFx9Q/UNM7ArOD97I/AAAAAAAAZYQ/evXJ3g35R-I/IMG_4104_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="320" height="480" /></a></p> <p>It’s this magnetic arm band thing and you wrap it around your arm with the Velcro. This True Value has an end cap with all this “as seen on TV” stuff on it and this was there. I think it was $20? Twenty bucks of awesome, I tell you <strong>what</strong>. Especially on jobs like this, I am ALWAYS dropping screws or wing nuts or whatever. This keeps them right where I can reach them and they don’t go anywhere. </p> <p>And it’s soooo fashionable too, be sure to let all the cool people see you in it: </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-vdS15wvoFdc/UNM7BBge40I/AAAAAAAAZYY/Xj53ldnQvDg/s1600-h/IMG_4140%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-nb2A6TnUuW0/UNM7BpE87cI/AAAAAAAAZYg/UExWBVXvqJg/IMG_4140_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="320" height="480" /></a></p> <p>That’s my attempt at a tough face. Failing. </p> <p>I have a thing with as seen on TV stuff by the way. I have an odd fascination with all of it. No snuggie here yet. You? :) </p> <p>Next up, you’ll need to drill your brackets into the wall. For this I used my next new tool, the Master Mechanic Swift Driver Ratcheting Screwdriver (say that three times fast): </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-C5JtdpR72XI/UNM7B6WDkYI/AAAAAAAAZYo/kxJDWN_5hhI/s1600-h/IMG_4121%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="ratcheting screwdriver" border="0" alt="ratcheting screwdriver" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-H94lr-MK9Ik/UNM7CusYJuI/AAAAAAAAZYw/vl-vl-DY_3M/IMG_4121_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="360" height="540" /></a> </p> <p>The True Value folks sent me one to try out earlier this year and I have thoroughly enjoyed using it. It is SO much easer than a screwdriver people! I actually find it easier to use than a power drill sometimes – it’s hard to get control of a drill at times -- even I still have it skip out and I dent the wall with the bit. Once or ten times. </p> <p>This one is a great in between the power drill and a screwdriver – you use your hand to just ratchet it so it turns the screw for you. It’s hard to explain so I took a quick video:</p> <iframe height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/n45w5S3izJs" frameborder="0" width="420" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe> <p> </p> <p>Master Mechanic is the brand name for True Value and I have at least three tools from this line and love them all. Really pleased. The only thing is I wish this screwdriver was magnetic so the screws stuck on it on like my drill. </p> <p>It made quick work of putting those brackets up: </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-JrFP7SzevOA/UNM7CyDITXI/AAAAAAAAZY4/RDoc3cJ2vHw/s1600-h/IMG_4115%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="hanging bamboo blinds" border="0" alt="hanging bamboo blinds" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/--Hp5spEz9ac/UNM7DYGncQI/AAAAAAAAZZA/dmUD9RUxmLc/IMG_4115_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="440" height="242" /></a></p> <p>I hope you can see from this picture how the brackets are on the wall for an outside mount installation – you want the the metal part that the nut screws on to to be pointing down. Much like an inside mount, but facing out. (For an inside mount I put them sideways.)</p> <p>Once the brackets are up it’s easy! Just slide your shade on them and use the wing nuts to secure them: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-EpqlucK31_M/UNM7DsoP-JI/AAAAAAAAZZI/r1B1at-xKxo/s1600-h/IMG_4119%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="hanging bamboo blinds" border="0" alt="hanging bamboo blinds" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-7hEY3El2OG0/UNM7EEEoQDI/AAAAAAAAZZQ/wHce_vmqFws/IMG_4119_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="400" height="267" /></a></p> <p>And there you have it – a shade on the window, finally!:</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-EjaKeG6JsME/UNM7Eu2z9LI/AAAAAAAAZZY/6buzSY5J7z8/s1600-h/IMG_4123%25255B12%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="hanging bamboo blinds outside mount" border="0" alt="hanging bamboo blinds outside mount" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-D5FC7dFrXnc/UNM7Fu3XjfI/AAAAAAAAZZg/gtn2WKtSoY0/IMG_4123_thumb%25255B14%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="360" height="563" /></a></p> <p>Here’s the thing about hanging window treatments and shades really high – I love doing it because it gives the illusion the window is taller than it is. And I wanted this one high because this particular shade is still pretty thick at the top, even when pulled all the way up. So if it’s hung inside the window frame, it blocks a fair amount of sunlight. This way it doesn’t block any. </p> <p>But I find that when just drapes are hung SUPER high, like to the ceiling, and the shades (if there are any) are hung lower, it can look kind of off. Like you’re trying to make the window look bigger and you can tell. You shouldn’t be able to tell. ;) </p> <p>Once I get drapes up here it will really make that window look much taller than it is and will block out even more light for my lovely guests. :)</p> <p>One more thing off the HUGE to do list, it feels good! The list for just this room is a page long…2013 is the year of the guest room, I can FEEL it. </p> <p>Are you a bamboo shades person like me? Inside or outside mount? Or are you loving your blinds? </p> <p> </p> <p><em><font size="2">I was one of the bloggers selected by True Value to work on the DIY Squad. Thanks SO much for all the lovely comments on the <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2013/06/powder-room-redo-complete.html">powder room post</a>! I’m working on answering your questions so stay tuned if I haven’t gotten back to you yet! </p> <p>I wanted to show you how I made over one of my favorite parts of the room (there are a lot of them) – the boat oar I found at a vintage mart a few months ago: </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-aeEiD-35Mf0/UcPPmSTPUjI/AAAAAAAAeLc/_X7Btv57HQY/s1600-h/IMG_5743%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="vintage boat oar redo" border="0" alt="vintage boat oar redo" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-X1OkcjfEwZU/UcPPm3VsSJI/AAAAAAAAeLk/8DModL0y760/IMG_5743_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="400" height="601" /></a></p> <p>I first showed it to you in <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-thrill-of-thrifty-hunt.html">this post</a> and as of a few days ago it still looked like that. :) This little redo seriously took about 20 minutes, and that was with paint drying! </p> <p>I started out by wiping it down to prep it for paint: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-fQThvnMzjEY/UcPPnRZQVPI/AAAAAAAAeLs/-x5dhIkCpAY/s1600-h/IMG_5750%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="vintage boat oar redo" border="0" alt="vintage boat oar redo" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-LrsH-MOXseU/UcPPn60LJrI/AAAAAAAAeL0/JvQtqpAKMTk/IMG_5750_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="332" /></a></p> <p>I let it dry and then mixed some white paint (I used my CeCe Caldwell stuff, but regular white paint would do just fine. Flat may work better for this particular look.) with a little bit of water: </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-3UVGVhV3Ns4/UcPPoWWzdmI/AAAAAAAAeL8/nE8ympWorBs/s1600-h/IMG_5751%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="vintage boat oar redo" border="0" alt="vintage boat oar redo" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-9g6YSI-kzcE/UcPPo9SZWCI/AAAAAAAAeME/5SQoH-fmucA/IMG_5751_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="354" /></a></p> <p>I didn’t want the oar to be covered completely – I wanted it to have a “wash” kind of look and this did it: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-fBK0AHGggZU/UcPPpdRk3jI/AAAAAAAAeMM/q2HcaKGFsm4/s1600-h/IMG_5752%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="paint mixed with water for a wash" border="0" alt="paint mixed with water for a wash" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-vgF65pKTfbo/UcPPqGIO0PI/AAAAAAAAeMU/KA7ymudIzvY/IMG_5752_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="332" /></a></p> <p>The nice thing is when it’s watered down a bit it takes even less time to dry. :)</p> <p>I let it dry about ten minutes, and then used my delicate FrogTape to start marking where I wanted my stripes: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-RKyxvr-9RLk/UcPPqov3x-I/AAAAAAAAeMc/0ZOVTikoM0Y/s1600-h/IMG_5754%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="vintage boat oar redo" border="0" alt="vintage boat oar redo" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-R4hVXgryVDk/UcPPrE7JumI/AAAAAAAAeMk/FBEkGDJAtFM/IMG_5754_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="332" /></a></p> <p>That one was on the handle -- I just searched striped boat oar images and kind of winged the design. </p> <p>I taped off each section, painted and took the tape off immediately. I did that just because I knew even though the paint was dry to the touch it wasn’t cured and the tape may remove it. I take my tape off right away whenever I do stripes anyway so I get a really sharp line. </p> <p>I moved on to the wider part and did a little stripe first: </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ZKjIWCH5a9c/UcPPrhwcGAI/AAAAAAAAeMs/N5FNwKrpwUk/s1600-h/IMG_5755%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="vintage boat oar redo" border="0" alt="vintage boat oar redo" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-GmIAV01niOg/UcPPsBkmGVI/AAAAAAAAeM0/2Ry_sGACE04/IMG_5755_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="332" /></a></p> <p>When I pulled off that tape it did pull up a little bit of the paint, but I actually liked the look so I didn’t worry about it. I didn’t want it to look perfect anyway. ;) </p> <p>Then I made a wider one in the middle: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-eyeEc0SfLxM/UcPPspjfDuI/AAAAAAAAeM8/aKGtDo15lc0/s1600-h/IMG_5756%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="nautical stripes boat oar" border="0" alt="nautical stripes boat oar" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-aTX-yKVMGpM/UcPPtOJHLLI/AAAAAAAAeNE/w6bCHoa7IJo/IMG_5756_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="332" /></a></p> <p>You can see there that I cut the FrogTape down the middle for skinnier pieces. Since I was working so fast I didn’t want to put the tape down over the red paint I had just done – this allowed me to keep working quickly. :) </p> <p>I did all the red stripes, hung the oar in the bathroom and then realized I wanted to pull in some of that blue tone in the room. I had it over at the vanity/sink, but everything around the toilet was red. </p> <p>So I grabbed the blue paint I used on <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2013/01/aubusson-blue-in-foyer.html">this post</a> (it worked perfectly!) and added a few more skinny stripes:</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-qkgeVA1JcB8/UcPPtnsqnUI/AAAAAAAAeNM/dBqO51azKMk/s1600-h/IMG_5757%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="nautical stripes boat oar" border="0" alt="nautical stripes boat oar" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-fB3sHtEvJLQ/UcPPuFCJGGI/AAAAAAAAeNU/G0L4ZdAbIN8/IMG_5757_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="676" /></a></p> <p>I gotta be honest…I squealed a little when I saw how it all finished. ;) It was so stinkin’ cute!:</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-OTqHmczMNUE/UcPPuiJkpMI/AAAAAAAAeNc/l5EWxDmwgbc/s1600-h/IMG_5794%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="nautical stripes boat oar" border="0" alt="nautical stripes boat oar" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-E1rW7NLzbWQ/UcPPvBqkQzI/AAAAAAAAeNk/sMEbvEnHnwY/IMG_5794_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="550" height="885" /></a></p> <p>I think adding that little bit of blue was a good call – it ties the whole room together! </p> <p>To hang it I just nailed a picture hanger thing to the back of the handle at the top. </p> <p>In the real life you can see much more of the bottom of the oar because you see it from higher up than in the pics: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-AHL4daYEBqQ/UcPPvoQX0aI/AAAAAAAAeNs/uEIR9dimiLU/s1600-h/3%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="wood planked wall bathroom " border="0" alt="wood planked wall bathroom " src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-pTJiORd-ITc/UcPPwOR-KiI/AAAAAAAAeN0/_-7wtwwQYsE/3_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="751" /></a> So that’s how the cutest little oar art came to be! It was super fast and I used paint I already had – the oar itself was $10. Love it!</p> <p>The room isn’t exactly nautical themed but I think it still works – you don’t need to follow a specific theme to make something you love work in a room! </p> <p>Thanks again for all the sweet comments my friends! Have a GREAT weekend! </p>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781209617172261323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6566801726647592784.post-12522062882465226712013-11-08T17:05:00.000-08:002013-11-08T17:05:00.626-08:00Is this your dream house?<p>Hey hey! How are ya? I’ve been dealing with some computer problems this morning, hence the late post. I thought those weren’t supposed to happen on a Mac?? ;) </p> <p>Anyhoo, the other day I caught the last few minutes of the HGTV dream house special and was pleasantly surprised with the bits I saw. Every year there are definitely parts I love and some I not-so-love. I found a little of both when I went to the site to see more of the house. </p> <p>Have you seen it yet? I’d love to hear your thoughts too!</p> <p>It’s absolutely beautiful from the outside, looks like a tree house to me:</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-HMMmDZ_-nAs/UOcqGecnxFI/AAAAAAAAZqo/4JKve4hIGTI/s1600-h/DH2013_Front-Yard-01-Major-Front-Exterior_s4x3_lg%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="HGTV dream home 2013" border="0" alt="HGTV dream home 2013" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-XkOpPLKXjfo/UOcqHGCa7-I/AAAAAAAAZqw/Vxab3w6z-u0/DH2013_Front-Yard-01-Major-Front-Exterior_s4x3_lg_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="376" /></a></p> <p>The front porch is amazing, and those shingles look like cedar but are really made of PVC:</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-3i3lBz6AmnE/UOcqH57OLqI/AAAAAAAAZq4/4S3pcnfgh-c/s1600-h/DH2013_Front-Porch-07-Door-Open-EPP2116_s4x3_lg%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="HGTV dream house 2013" border="0" alt="HGTV dream house 2013" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-97YUm_XwR4o/UOcqIqh368I/AAAAAAAAZrA/v12cu9Kprc4/DH2013_Front-Porch-07-Door-Open-EPP2116_s4x3_lg_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="338" /></a></p> <p>Wild huh?</p> <p>And you KNOW I love that front door with the glass! (We discussed the potential for glass in our front door in <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2012/04/glass-doorcould-you-do-it.html">here</a> – so many of you had opinions on that!)</p> <p>I love that they created a little relaxing nook in the entry here: </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-DL2GM2q7EJI/UOcqJGdjkGI/AAAAAAAAZrI/kY0kiYKey70/s1600-h/DH2013_Entry-Hall-01-Foyer-FINAL_s4x3_lg%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="HGTV dream house" border="0" alt="HGTV dream house" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-JuIbfpC7Ap8/UOcqKo4L2cI/AAAAAAAAZrQ/ONKGmqoV-Pc/DH2013_Entry-Hall-01-Foyer-FINAL_s4x3_lg_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="338" /></a></p> <p>I don’t imagine I would lay down for a nap in the foyer, but whatever, it’s cute! ;)</p> <p>I have mixed thoughts on the family room space: </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-lrA-7y17adg/UOcqLYjBeZI/AAAAAAAAZrY/6oK7LmO7dLE/s1600-h/DH2013_Great-Room-01-Living-Room-FINAL_s4x3_lg%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-3fHEZ5vX1Bc/UOcqL2va2lI/AAAAAAAAZrg/XcmtvDMEzwU/DH2013_Great-Room-01-Living-Room-FINAL_s4x3_lg_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="338" /></a></p> <p>I LOVE the tall ceilings, all the windows, the floors! </p> <p>But the fireplace feels out of place to me with the contemporary look and I’m not a fan of the sofa fabric…like, at all:</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-tUfz4a5A1ls/UOcqMs-d8tI/AAAAAAAAZro/gT3n9Iz1p20/s1600-h/DH2013_Great-Room-10-Seating-EPP8701_s4x3_lg%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="HGTV dream house 2013" border="0" alt="HGTV dream house 2013" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-COqiccTHX-k/UOcqNbOznhI/AAAAAAAAZrw/gxZW9l3yehE/DH2013_Great-Room-10-Seating-EPP8701_s4x3_lg_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="376" /></a></p> <p>It just looks so heavy and out of place to me for this room. I expected something a bit lighter. And there is a TON of green in this house. <em>Lots</em>. Some pops of a few more colors would be beautiful!</p> <p>I LOVE this console, with it’s paneled glass doors: </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-JESi_9gIOgw/UOcqOJNLwoI/AAAAAAAAZr4/fJG5wD--5lE/s1600-h/DH2013_Great-Room-11-Side-Table-EPP7732_s3x4_lg%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="HGTV dream house 2013" border="0" alt="HGTV dream house 2013" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-8ldCk6SDWTE/UOcqOwhLutI/AAAAAAAAZsA/szUUjYjdGf0/DH2013_Great-Room-11-Side-Table-EPP7732_s3x4_lg_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="320" height="427" /></a></p> <p>Love the simple accessorizing too – I’m kind of obsessed with that huge crane. There’s one in one pic, two in another right? Oh well, I love them both. ;)</p> <p>The kitchen I’m not digging as much as some of the other spaces. This house looks like it would have such a lovely, traditional kitchen, and this one leans more modern -- it surprised me (maybe that’s the point!):<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-qVknJPkpMuI/UOcqQ4crF0I/AAAAAAAAZsY/jEedDSXJy58/s1600-h/DH2013_Kitchen-01-Wide-Hero-EPP0385A_s4x3_lg%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="HGTV dream home 2013" border="0" alt="HGTV dream home 2013" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Y4Nb7STbiXQ/UOcqRhmyusI/AAAAAAAAZsg/bjrCNSR_zW8/DH2013_Kitchen-01-Wide-Hero-EPP0385A_s4x3_lg_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="338" /></a></p> <p>I love the base cabinets, even love the color. And I’m a fan of painted ceilings (I’ve painted most of ours, the <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2012/01/well-finally-office-reveal.html">blue one in my office is my fave</a>), but that saturated green feels SO heavy to me: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-uv9UvESvGOI/UOcqSHIBXWI/AAAAAAAAZso/vxad_VphjA8/s1600-h/DH2013_Kitchen-05-Island-Range-Refrigerator-EPP0396_s4x3_lg%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="HGTV dream house 2013" border="0" alt="HGTV dream house 2013" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-l83EYzOCRCA/UOcqS1PEpMI/AAAAAAAAZsw/vPXN-Ozi4HQ/DH2013_Kitchen-05-Island-Range-Refrigerator-EPP0396_s4x3_lg_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="400" height="300" /></a></p> <p>I do love that they used the open shelving in what would be an awkward spot for cabinets next to the fridge!</p> <p>The dining area was more of the same tones – I think a different color for the chairs would be lovely but I love those rattan ones at the ends of the table! The Christmas Elf even brought Disney shirts. <br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitMK01_8hCrIUnXfKjTGKI1-sx7oeVkT7eY0tqcbL3sfYAqU1WYT-ZX_pK4EBBvx44OMJXDD5sJRHh33EQacm6OBq8IVNEUTBEePGHdH5TZnvVrU31jkI7EQcXh15c6KNDNps4KSj0uIAJ/s1600/christmas+2012+%25282%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="217" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitMK01_8hCrIUnXfKjTGKI1-sx7oeVkT7eY0tqcbL3sfYAqU1WYT-ZX_pK4EBBvx44OMJXDD5sJRHh33EQacm6OBq8IVNEUTBEePGHdH5TZnvVrU31jkI7EQcXh15c6KNDNps4KSj0uIAJ/s320/christmas+2012+%25282%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />But then my dad got sick and the timing wasn't right. And even tho the kids totally understood why we couldn't go, they were bummed.<br /><br />And then last week we started to play "What If . . ." And two days ago we decided to play "Let's Do It!"<br /><br />Yes, 2 days ago! This means in the last two days we have found a house-sitter, a dog sitter, hotels and half-price-tickets (great deal for military right now!). We even bought a plane ticket for Lizzy to join us--as a college kid still living at home she lucks out--she couldn't get the time off work and wouldn't fit into the Pilot, so she gets to FLY! I am SO BUMMED our bigger kids aren't coming, but it was too difficult to arrange on such short notice. Next time!<br /><br />Lizzy did a treasure hunt to tell the kids we were going. They went all around the house looking for clues and ended with finding out we were going to the Happy Place!<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglKU1CzaubCLVkJ4HUXaufhyv2L50EtrokXnVpCmsyZHO4n_TTr4p4L4usI8WK8YQx8EkyI9SD41gezVqSEHC1HBDFKT4_KazUC4GNBs9oDLjdAyYqH7Dp1B5xrbsMaeCDusYLPA-Uy-b8/s1600/P1100514.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglKU1CzaubCLVkJ4HUXaufhyv2L50EtrokXnVpCmsyZHO4n_TTr4p4L4usI8WK8YQx8EkyI9SD41gezVqSEHC1HBDFKT4_KazUC4GNBs9oDLjdAyYqH7Dp1B5xrbsMaeCDusYLPA-Uy-b8/s320/P1100514.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpkNQlOke6-NDgwkaTjj4Bt4jWIuHrTe6ptEY96iahuml8DGLyIOqyS0kpcvxiA2HzRmCPig2yDEfDGndC9ic1rImzgHfhvDzAsMEJuSnzySWe8-Gv-t9xGYDGOfQzxAZJggbNZgy-mH11/s1600/P1100513.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpkNQlOke6-NDgwkaTjj4Bt4jWIuHrTe6ptEY96iahuml8DGLyIOqyS0kpcvxiA2HzRmCPig2yDEfDGndC9ic1rImzgHfhvDzAsMEJuSnzySWe8-Gv-t9xGYDGOfQzxAZJggbNZgy-mH11/s320/P1100513.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM_kGEPiJZJ4CBkMTGKaDwrcsrv45SI7PfWT5TaDN-npQtJc5qNfVYFTlai3vHFz3jKYpj00Ht1X2m7Rfkwj2l1LaawP5ukd_zblamI_lIkNVYWIq90mDfA3WCnr0vTaH7rlPu1czjYQJs/s1600/P1100519.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM_kGEPiJZJ4CBkMTGKaDwrcsrv45SI7PfWT5TaDN-npQtJc5qNfVYFTlai3vHFz3jKYpj00Ht1X2m7Rfkwj2l1LaawP5ukd_zblamI_lIkNVYWIq90mDfA3WCnr0vTaH7rlPu1czjYQJs/s320/P1100519.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAOXqzAHiKRzJZxGGwI1bvuWpuZCrE2ViuXb3PoKf2GUymFpCBR8crj3SQkKe_vRYjrW5zf2FF0yvwWOT_kMCFK-pun060uOUh0u2br-5PWZsfjFPrpYFRSL7ExH4XSA6ofLJBhpl4D5ky/s1600/P1100517.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAOXqzAHiKRzJZxGGwI1bvuWpuZCrE2ViuXb3PoKf2GUymFpCBR8crj3SQkKe_vRYjrW5zf2FF0yvwWOT_kMCFK-pun060uOUh0u2br-5PWZsfjFPrpYFRSL7ExH4XSA6ofLJBhpl4D5ky/s320/P1100517.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div>I didn't get a picture of the hoopla, but let me tell you, it was BIG!!!<br /><br />They weren't quite as excited when they realized we have to DRIVE to get there (long two days!), but the destination is quite exciting!<br /><br />At 9 PM last night I started packing everyone. It has been great to see comments from readers who have been down this road and had encouraging stories to share. Mei Mei's recovery is so much easier than when Kim had her bone graft. Kim's hip was horribly painful after the procedure.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQIZ-zHI4a2LDJtQGRMU3kDA2hBd1GwfLSWwkP2JeSwt16lEGysRAfPS069S2_17imQN-8meylHSehbT8lOSRt-lJYz1uSJndHNeSjPI9-0pSjGsEDWFydug-JvSuhTeMGPEnCLc3AOzRI/s1600/anna+playroom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQIZ-zHI4a2LDJtQGRMU3kDA2hBd1GwfLSWwkP2JeSwt16lEGysRAfPS069S2_17imQN-8meylHSehbT8lOSRt-lJYz1uSJndHNeSjPI9-0pSjGsEDWFydug-JvSuhTeMGPEnCLc3AOzRI/s320/anna+playroom.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div align="center"></div><div style="text-align: center;">In the playroom just hours after surgery. Her face is much more swollen today. </div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div>For those who do not live in the "cleft world" there is a <a href="http://www.cleftline.org/what-we-do/publications/fact-sheets/bonegrafting-the-cleft-maxilla/">nice explanation here</a>. <br /><br />She had two oral surgeries and braces, in preparation for the surgery, so she's ready to be done with this rodeo. <br /><br />Mei Mei is now home, lounging on the couch watching Sesame Street, and asking me every five minutes when she can have hard food.<br /><br />When Kim had this surgery her surgeon allowed soft foods after just a few days. Mei Mei's surgeon is much more cautious and only allows liquids and soft foods blended up. For four weeks.<br /><br />Four weeks peoples! The blender and I will become very good friends. Ugh. This does not sound like fun. Especially for Mei Mei. But I've already been googling recipes! Thanks again for all the prayers. We now pray that the bone graft will take so she will be DONE with surgery!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781209617172261323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6566801726647592784.post-17574176469904900642013-11-06T17:02:00.000-08:002013-11-06T17:02:00.085-08:00The French Reflection Etoile Vision Swivel 71/2" Cosmetic Mirror Titanium/Nickel 7X Optical<a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-French-Reflection-Cosmetic-Titanium/dp/B00DOK0JP4%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAJ5DAUUMCL6FZ25KQ%26tag%3Dle0372-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00DOK0JP4"><img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41X-p2aqHsL._SL160_.jpg" /></a><br /><strong>Features</strong><br /><ul><li>Magnifications: 3x, 5x, or 7x, - AND - 3x or 7x, each with Optically Ground Glass.</li><li>The mirror glass is backed with pure silver.</li><li>Solid Brass frame, heavily plated, can never rust, even in the most humid environment.</li><li>Your choice of finishes: Ivory, Chrome, Nickel, or Titanium/Matte Nickel.</li><li>Black casing.</li></ul><br />List Price: $1,235.00<br /><strong>Special Offer: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00DOK0JP4%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAJ5DAUUMCL6FZ25KQ%26tag%3Dle0372-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D386001%26creativeASIN%3DB00DOK0JP4">check this out!</a></strong><p></p><p><strong>Product Description</strong><br />Etoile in French means "star" in English. It’s time for another before and after shindig! Well…it was time last week and I totally spaced it. Better late than never I say. </p> <p>As always I found so many great projects to share from last month. I seriously had to tell myself it was time to stop…I just am so impressed, like always. So enjoy these highlights and then go ahead and link up your own! </p> <p>The room Tiffany <a href="http://worthwhiledomicile.blogspot.com/2013/05/shared-big-girl-room-and-nursery-reveal.html">created for her kids</a> was one of my favorites – it’s just beautiful!: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Jh2H8fuQTrk/UdrRzQy5A_I/AAAAAAAAei8/6b6ZApE2M_M/s1600-h/DSC02291%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="yellow gray purple bedroom " border="0" alt="yellow gray purple bedroom " src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-kDFzY8Pcc7Y/UdrRz68oinI/AAAAAAAAejE/veYiWrnUC_0/DSC02291_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="550" height="411" /></a></p> <p>I love the combination of the gray, purple and yellow – so pretty.  </p> <p>Jaime and her husband made their <a href="http://www.somuchbetterwithage.com/2013/05/basement-before-after/">basement space</a> fun for both the adults and the littles:</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-2IUGs8uPLUY/UdrR0VxZohI/AAAAAAAAejI/puLYdqSwoAY/s1600-h/IMG_6675b%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="crawlspace basement " border="0" alt="crawlspace basement " src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-iZfTt33VUV8/UdrR06TeRlI/AAAAAAAAejU/lCN0uhyHxW8/IMG_6675b_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="550" height="366" /></a></p> <p>Thing is, it’s not even technically a basement – it’s a tall crawlspace! I think that makes it even cooler! </p> <p>Andrea’s <a href="http://willowispandrea.blogspot.ca/2013/05/cottage-living-roomthe-reveal.html">living room</a> is so well done I just had to share: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-FVV9pE9z8tc/UdrR1VndCcI/AAAAAAAAejc/8qKAiJKcBdQ/s1600-h/livingroomreveal%252520007%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="traditional living room " border="0" alt="traditional living room " src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-c1PqrnKXrFY/UdrR105HicI/AAAAAAAAejk/luEuXpDJjrI/livingroomreveal%252520007_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="550" height="366" /></a></p> <p>Isn’t it lovely? She’s revealing her kitchen redo soon, which I’m dying to see! </p> <p>I’m all about bathroom renos lately and I loved Jess’s <a href="http://www.homewithbaxter.com/2013/05/house-tour-week-5-half-bathlaundry-room.html">powder room and laundry</a> combo: </p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-QxCEOQHKamU/UdrR2eDygaI/AAAAAAAAejs/Mla6kapcsIo/s1600-h/Half%252520Bath%2525207%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="dary gray white beadboard" border="0" alt="dary gray white beadboard" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-dkfLmd_vcx0/UdrR20v-hqI/AAAAAAAAej0/ScU8h69bDck/Half%252520Bath%2525207_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="290" height="436" /></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-TQ-cv_DPtqg/UdrR3cYHjWI/AAAAAAAAej8/GB-5BqR8z64/s1600-h/Laundry%252520Room%2525203%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="dark gray walls white cabinets" border="0" alt="dark gray walls white cabinets" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-6lY_fEbALZ0/UdrR33rYB7I/AAAAAAAAekE/N8VnVk9NTuc/Laundry%252520Room%2525203_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="290" height="436" /></a> </p> <p>I love the dark gray with the white – and all the finishing touches are so well done! </p> <p>So I’ve been meaning to stop by our Tractor Supply store for years now – and now I think I may have to do it today because of <a href="http://confessionsofaplateaddict.blogspot.com/2013/05/finding-french-farmhouse-styleat-farm.html">Debbie’s post</a>: </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-aHkOW6qsouc/UdrR4eZrGWI/AAAAAAAAekM/HizpBQVRmbk/s1600-h/CONFESSIONS%252520OF%252520A%252520PLATE%252520ADDICT%252520French%252520Farmhouse%252520Style...from%252520Tractor%252520Supply_thumb%25255B5%25255D%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="tractor supply decor" border="0" alt="tractor supply decor" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-TlnQI1GYvTE/UdrR463u1mI/AAAAAAAAekU/mhYpaq7FFRU/CONFESSIONS%252520OF%252520A%252520PLATE%252520ADDICT%252520French%252520Farmhouse%252520Style...from%252520Tractor%252520Supply_thumb%25255B5%25255D_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="500" /></a></p> <p>Did you know they had decorative items? I’m definitely in an outdoor project state of mind right now. There were SO many great exterior posts linked up, I couldn’t pick just one. </p> <p>I LOVE Heather’s <a href="http://thesouthernstateofmind.blogspot.com/2013/05/our-back-porch-is-finally-ready-for.html">back porch reveal</a>: </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-N299y5_pLJI/UdrR6mLZ48I/AAAAAAAAeks/2bcRuJ0UeUU/s1600-h/back%252520porch%252520at%252520night%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="striped rug deck" border="0" alt="striped rug deck" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-TiIngpnQab0/UdrR7HFQg2I/AAAAAAAAek0/0OIkOxovOKg/back%252520porch%252520at%252520night_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="550" height="366" /></a></p> <p>She had me at twinkling lights at dusk, for real. </p> <p>Jo-Anna is making over her deck and I just loved the color she <a href="http://www.aprettylifeinthesuburbs.com/our-deck-makeover-part-1/">picked for the furniture</a>: </p> <p></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-XzWUe3Fv9hQ/UdrR7gnKQaI/AAAAAAAAek8/OR8foMkMycs/s1600-h/Patio-Set-4-A-Pretty-Life%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="spray paint outdoor furniture" border="0" alt="spray paint outdoor furniture" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Dv8Q7oC8tS0/UdrR7-mMv-I/AAAAAAAAelE/OBxTb2PfDjc/Patio-Set-4-A-Pretty-Life_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="550" height="346" /></a></p> <p>I love that dark stained deck too! </p> <p>Samantha’s <a href="http://littlebitsofhome.blogspot.com/2013/06/southern-style-porch.html">pretty porch</a> had me swooning: </p> <p></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-YTzcwfNQF2w/UdrR8dcsCAI/AAAAAAAAelM/eXCkYRbTRVE/s1600-h/IMG_1814%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="traditional front porch" border="0" alt="traditional front porch" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-BWVabSJ7ZuI/UdrR87FBpzI/AAAAAAAAelU/NNwCzg4DUh8/IMG_1814_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="550" height="366" /></a></p> <p>The brick, the columns, the red door! Perfection! </p> <p>And finally, but certainly not least, I loved how Tonya <a href="http://loveoffamilyandhome.net/2013/06/side-yard-makeover-creating-curb-appeal.html">transformed her side yard</a>:</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-DP2OrZzH49g/UdrR9YaaqFI/AAAAAAAAelc/F7tWeU4YJeE/s1600-h/Sideyard%252520Makeover%25252015%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="side yard garden hosta" border="0" alt="side yard garden hosta" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-cTW27BPd1Y8/UdrR9ylOfDI/AAAAAAAAelk/Wv-Y5QBiEBM/Sideyard%252520Makeover%25252015_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="550" height="383" /></a></p> <p>I have a similar spot I’ve been meaning to show you, but her annuals looks so pretty in there, I may have to add some of those first. ;) Our side yards are neglected big time, which is funny because they are really what people see when they drive by! Next summer I’m planning to focus on getting them spruced up. </p> <p>Speaking of outdoors – this is the BEST time to find stuff for your deck or backyard. It still drives me crazy that everything goes on clearance in JULY – but it does. So check out the stores for great discounts on outdoor furniture and plants right now! </p> <p>OK, time to link it up for July! Happy Monday! I’ve already mentioned that I’m slowing down to my normal sloth-like pace on the blog this summer, but this also means my posting times will vary quite a bit. OK…they do anyway, but they will even more so in the summer. I’m not a good blogger that writes posts ahead and has them ready to go first thing in the morning. I wish I was. *Hangs blogging head in shame.* So things will be a little erratic, I hope you’ll hang in there with me. :) </p> <p>So. I’ve fallen in love with a new city. Well, I should say park. A big one. You all know how much <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/search/label/NYC">we love NYC</a> – it’s our favorite place on earth, other than home. But now it has some competition, named Disney. ;) </p> <p>Last week we took a very quick vacation down to Florida. And when I say quick I mean only about three days. And when I say vacation I mean VACATION – this is our first real family vacation (other than to New York) that we’ve ever taken anywhere that didn’t have something to do with work. </p> <p>I’m serious people – every trip we’ve ever been on as a family (or heck, even as a couple!) has had something to do with hubby’s work. Every. single. one. And now that <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2013/05/bittersweet.html">he’s retired</a>, we were able to carve out a few days to get away. That would have never happened in summer’s past! </p> <p>So the whole fact that we got away was so special to me, you have no idea. And the fact that my son and I (yes, I was a Disney newbie) finally got to Disney made it even more special. </p> <p>We spent our first day in Legoland actually – the Bub is Lego <strong>obsessed</strong> so we HAD to go there. I think he was more excited about that than he was Disney! We had some interesting moments with downpours and tornado warnings and taking shelter in the restrooms with everyone else in the park, but after about an hour the day turned much better and we were able to really enjoy the park without crowds – it was perfect!</p> <p>That evening we headed to our hotel at Disney and I started falling in love. We stayed at the Polynesian and it was STUNNING:</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-cUyuTtQEXV8/UbXvqpkXkBI/AAAAAAAAdyg/FRI6HnPW9yQ/s1600-h/IMG_6221%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-AyGGH-yflLs/UbXvrH08pdI/AAAAAAAAdyo/yJcvk5okhso/IMG_6221_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="599" /></a></p> <p>I wanted to spend about an hour taking pics but we just didn’t have time while there. I will do it next time – the grounds are just gorgeous! </p> <p>So I totally got the Disney “thing” the second we walked in to the hotel – we were greeted and escorted through the hotel to our building. The squealing started (from me) when we walked in to our room and I saw the cute little touches everywhere: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-A6lD3ch_Xfs/UbXvrdROovI/AAAAAAAAdyw/0_6dC573zFM/s1600-h/IMG_6074%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-iOBpd0aqlvs/UbXvrxmNbmI/AAAAAAAAdy4/_p5teAJxCTY/IMG_6074_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="601" /></a></p> <p>And it continued when I realized the view from our room: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-U4UcoMHssTE/UbXvsLzj_hI/AAAAAAAAdzA/_hiXyFCLLXQ/s1600-h/IMG_6076%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-9LpHGThd5ek/UbXvsWqWM9I/AAAAAAAAdzI/zDrOg8yTbpk/IMG_6076_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="500" /></a></p> <p>I almost cried. I <strike>almost</strike> cried a few times on the trip. It was emotional to finally get there after 37 years – it made me <em>so</em> giddy and happy. </p> <p>The emotions certainly didn’t stop when we walked in to the park for the first time: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Ag8qccueoVQ/UbXvs93oTEI/AAAAAAAAdzQ/lk_eK5E4Gyo/s1600-h/IMG_6083%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="Main street Disney" border="0" alt="Main street Disney" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-4GxMSqUtsyc/UbXvtXe9qDI/AAAAAAAAdzY/bHZN0dXGW1s/IMG_6083_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="601" /></a></p> <p>I had an obsession with Cinderella’s castle. I could have spent an hour just walking around that one thing. </p> <p>It’s magical, of course:</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-5O6V8r0Cd38/UbXvt0Qj3EI/AAAAAAAAdzg/U36UGGSS3Mk/s1600-h/IMG_6251%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-xsm_jdLrMbg/UbXvubtFgXI/AAAAAAAAdzo/FQivLOkOyLY/IMG_6251_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="599" /></a></p> <p>So I mentioned this was a quick trip and I know so many of you experienced Disney folks are freaking out that we only spent two days at the parks. I know. But it was our only chance to get away in June (hubby is retired from teaching but so busy with other obligations already) and I didn’t want to go later in the summer when it was stupid hot, so this is what we got. </p> <p>And we took full advantage! We rode a TON of rides in the short time we were there: </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-d1Po4ZVOuEg/UbXvu_-thPI/AAAAAAAAdzw/fNued9O21Dc/s1600-h/IMG_6085%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="cars at Disney" border="0" alt="cars at Disney" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-gHQB4mnUmJ8/UbXvvFQ2VmI/AAAAAAAAdz4/tNIob-Fj7lo/IMG_6085_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="477" height="706" /></a></p> <p>The Dumbo ride was one that I was especially drawn to – it just screams Disney to me: </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-XEzKgcd66OI/UbXvvg-U0GI/AAAAAAAAd0A/dzsrv5EmRmI/s1600-h/IMG_6104%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="dumbo ride Disney" border="0" alt="dumbo ride Disney" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-XPpAhxdl5o4/UbXvwDxXkOI/AAAAAAAAd0I/H_2qLv9KJc8/IMG_6104_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="500" /></a></p> <p>The small world ride was one of my favorites too, but Splash Mountain was our family fave hands down. SO. much. fun. </p> <p>We spent one evening in Epcot where we dined in Mexico: </p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-mbkJeWwzF4g/UbXvwT0GPgI/AAAAAAAAd0Q/9fkPZB6oUkA/s1600-h/IMG_6114%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-NIJdNsxDB2M/UbXvw_0PFDI/AAAAAAAAd0Y/zzHzsheHqxA/IMG_6114_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="290" height="386" /></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-PoxpHh-XP3Y/UbXvxA59bDI/AAAAAAAAd0g/aSQY-WmNPBg/s1600-h/IMG_6115%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-T6cOJsr9ysE/UbXvxT3KXII/AAAAAAAAd0o/fsh-QIRrpnk/IMG_6115_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="290" height="386" /></a> </p> <p>And it was incredible. ;) </p> <p>Hubby wanted us to stay for the Illuminations show that night, it gorgeous evening: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-cht4avSQDRk/UbXvxs8hghI/AAAAAAAAd0w/e-3AQqHs1Ok/s1600-h/IMG_6133%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-LiM27H63JQc/UbXvyAdGqMI/AAAAAAAAd04/ny4K1nfuZyA/IMG_6133_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="560" /></a></p> <p>The show was AWESOME, we all loved it. Although hubs said it used to be even cooler and was more of a laser light show: </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-_fP3K1DY4wo/UbXvyqIkXXI/AAAAAAAAd1A/6-c6oPSBgPU/s1600-h/IMG_6136%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-4D5YkanAwJw/UbXvy_jgk0I/AAAAAAAAd1I/XdmwH4bxuA4/IMG_6136_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="599" /></a></p> <p>This view was another one of those that made me misty: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-ep5NCmj-jGk/UbXvzQoOwXI/AAAAAAAAd1Q/YUBVZnowoXE/s1600-h/IMG_6167%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="epcot at nig" border="0" alt="epcot at nig" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-FZPqnCZJjMQ/UbXvzoMcXEI/AAAAAAAAd1Y/skSgr5sZZFE/IMG_6167_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="599" /></a></p> <p>It was an amazing trip. I totally get it now. Totally. <em>I am hooked</em>. </p> <p>I didn’t plan for our first trip like most would – I didn’t ask friends what we should do, didn’t read any blogs, didn’t make any dinner reservations. I’m the kind of person that just needs to figure it out for myself. I didn’t want us to be trying to rush to this or this “must do” while we were there, I just wanted us to experience it as <em>we</em> would. </p> <p>And we did. And it was perfect. :)</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-KJPn3xyEm3U/UbXv0D13yqI/AAAAAAAAd1g/NEtkfjoKDAY/s1600-h/IMG_6257%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="Mickey Mouse at Disney" border="0" alt="Mickey Mouse at Disney" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ADYCa6KoQs4/UbXv0f0gfaI/AAAAAAAAd1o/ko3pTUB5OVQ/IMG_6257_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="599" /></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-LRow0e5rnhU/UbXv0_LrvHI/AAAAAAAAd1w/6DSHA0ZD4sw/s1600-h/IMG_6264%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="fireworks at Disney" border="0" alt="fireworks at Disney" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-w8XfRONKkQY/UbXv1S34aXI/AAAAAAAAd14/JKgFACSIJy4/IMG_6264_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="601" /></a></p> <p>I figured out a few things fast on this trip – here are my tips for any fellow newbies who may be going this summer: </p> <p>1. Don’t try to look cute. Just don’t. The heat/weather/splash mountain gods will laugh at you. </p> <p>2. Buy the fan with the water in it that you pass on the way into the park and think, “I’m not <em>so</em> not spending money on that!” For all that is good…<em>BUY IT</em>. </p> <p>3. Dole Whip is seriously the most amazing, beautiful, delicious thing you will ever, ever, ever eat. <strong>Ever.</strong> </p> <p>That’s just about all you need to know. :) </p> <p>We didn’t even get two full days in the parks – the last day we got slammed with this: </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-vwcuHe5eF3w/UbXv1_e_OII/AAAAAAAAd2A/vwONIypjSLg/s1600-h/rain%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="downpour in Disney" border="0" alt="downpour in Disney" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-CkmdV2r-DCA/UbXv2NXOT1I/AAAAAAAAd2I/kvf4u2EaX64/rain_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="676" /></a></p> <p>We waited it out for about an hour, then when it calmed down a bit we did a little more, but it was just too intense. We headed back to the hotel for a much needed nap and a great meal. </p> <p>Usually when we head home from a trip I’m ready. The only time I’m not is when we’re in New York. I felt that this time too – I was SO sad to leave. I wanted to stay for another week – and for this homebody that’s saying something: </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-2n-RKoS0-48/UbXv2e0T-nI/AAAAAAAAd2Q/CiHIZSz4UqI/s1600-h/IMG_6275%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-kxGLpcyQosQ/UbXv292RPTI/AAAAAAAAd2Y/bMeITcTFgSE/IMG_6275_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="599" /></a></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p>We’re already planning our next trip. Hopefully later this year. :) I cannot WAIT!!</p> <p>Are you a Disney fan? Did you feel like this after your first trip? How many times have you been? When do stop missing it? ;)</p> <p>**P.S. Early June was a <strong>great</strong> time to go – I wanted us to go at this time of year on purpose. We were there before so many schools were out for the summer, the weather was hot but not as hot as it gets in mid/late summer and we actually got a hotel discount for staying that week. The only issue was the rain – I hear it’s an especially rainy season for Florida. </p>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781209617172261323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6566801726647592784.post-82296500913507401952013-11-04T08:31:00.000-08:002013-11-04T08:31:00.159-08:00The Fifth Wall<p>Hey hey! I’m back today with one of my FAVORITE changes to make to a room. OK, the actual process is not my favorite (it stinks) but the result is one I’m hooked on. </p> <p>It’s of course, your “fifth wall” – the ceiling. I was painting ceilings way before blogging – I’ve just always loved the look. I think it stems for my love of a pop of color next to bright white trim. I feel like if I’m going to put up crown molding I want to SEE it the molding. Lord knows it’s not easy to put up -- I want it to make an impact. :)</p> <p>I painted the Bub’s bathroom and nursery ceiling and then kept it that color for his <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/search/label/big%20boy%20room">big boy room</a> (and carried the color down to the backs of the built ins):</p> <p><img title="airplane boy room" border="0" alt="airplane boy room" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-VFBvt1ObakY/T7MDW2QIWUI/AAAAAAAAU-U/dNhi-WocnzQ/IMG_1299_thumb%25255B13%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="425" height="584" /></p> <p>I did it in my <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/search/label/office">office</a>, more than once. It was a rusty red color (twice) so I’ve now painted that ceiling THREE times:</p> <p><img title="gallery wall white frames" border="0" alt="gallery wall white frames" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-hk3ziH6ycMc/TxOmxVvKKWI/AAAAAAAAR8M/wfwYctcbYro/IMG_9655_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="672" /></p> <p>It looks aqua-ish here but it’s really a light blue. </p> <p>As I found these pictures I realized how much I love blue on a ceiling. Of course I was daring back in my “paint everything black” days years ago – a couple of our ceilings went really dark: </p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-EOdGsLuHTY0/URqFsfCFjBI/AAAAAAAAax4/hbLTw3wG3hc/s1600-h/image_thumb29_thumb1%25255B2%25255D.png"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="chocolate brown bathroom" border="0" alt="chocolate brown bathroom" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-NaNGQLwsnKc/URqFs6fn0OI/AAAAAAAAayA/bHni7k1KbOU/image_thumb29_thumb1_thumb.png?imgmax=800" width="285" height="427" /></a> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-4qD6-gKeBWQ/URqFtSvVohI/AAAAAAAAayI/Ewc8PKtbOoE/s1600-h/IMG_1900_thumb2%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="blue bathroom" border="0" alt="blue bathroom" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-EGHxlsyekDQ/URqFtl-Wh6I/AAAAAAAAayQ/OMUEeUG6bkQ/IMG_1900_thumb2_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="254" height="427" /></a> </p> <p>REAL dark. Too dark. You can see that I changed  it to blue last year.</p> <p>When we had hardwoods put in the dining area I realized just how dark it was: </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-m-F6RwIddtc/URqFuIg5FAI/AAAAAAAAayY/v1erJToGeUE/s1600-h/IMG_9633_thumb%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="chocolate brown dining room" border="0" alt="chocolate brown dining room" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-HAuDs1rMTj8/URqFu85-U0I/AAAAAAAAayg/n_4RGXymtv8/IMG_9633_thumb%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="320" height="479" /></a></p> <p>It was like a cave. Not my best decision ever. :)</p> <p>So when that room <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2012/10/library-bookcases-done-boom.html">got changed up last year</a> I painted that ceiling with a really light gray:</p> <p><img title="DIY built in bookcases" border="0" alt="DIY built in bookcases" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-rBUwzy1Ekd4/UJFS1VGkbII/AAAAAAAAYIU/pEWeu-u5uWw/IMG_3437_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="500" height="680" /></p> <p>All of those rooms I painted myself – most at least twice. A smallish room I have no problem with, but when I wanted to paint the family room and kitchen ceiling years ago, I hired out: </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-HmJxHXTxVdQ/URqFvBe4wvI/AAAAAAAAayo/GBOL3U-4aAk/s1600-h/IMG_5614_thumb%25255B2%25255D%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="family room tan walls" border="0" alt="family room tan walls" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-XlxZ_77UHtw/URqFvTHpDNI/AAAAAAAAayw/YCtH1MDQCsw/IMG_5614_thumb%25255B2%25255D_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="360" height="539" /></a></p> <p>It’s HUGE. I had that done probably, gosh…six or seven years ago? Maybe more? </p> <p>I did the same color as the walls (Sisal by Ralph Lauren), just in a flat sheen: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-4vWh5xjFxBY/URqFv1DTNqI/AAAAAAAAay4/oUZH-Zk8Tk4/s1600-h/IMG_5652_thumb%25255B4%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="corner fireplace" border="0" alt="corner fireplace" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-8bT7flNbpm4/URqFwIzp1uI/AAAAAAAAazA/RjEBaPkosbw/IMG_5652_thumb%25255B4%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="360" height="476" /></a></p> <p>For years it didn’t bother me, but lately, probably over the past two or so, it’s been driving me nutty. It was just SO heavy and dark. </p> <p>Thing is, we have <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2013/01/what-you-dont-see.html">some repair work</a> do to on the kitchen ceiling and I kept putting it off till we fixed that. But a few months ago I just couldn’t take it anymore. I bought the paint the week of Thanksgiving and actually thought I would try painting it “real quick.” Umm…I got busy, thank goodness, you know – with <em>those holidays</em>? (What was I thinking??)</p> <p>Anyway, the paint sat for months, until I started my <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2013/02/brighten-and-lighten-family-room.html">snowball of projects</a> in the family room a couple weeks ago. I started painting the ceiling and got about a fourth of that big space done. You can actually see where I stopped in the reflection of the mirror:</p> <img title="how to decorate a mantel" border="0" alt="how to decorate a mantel" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-y9CG9vgGmzQ/UREZ_bW12PI/AAAAAAAAamQ/hwBTtBBrnGY/IMG_4752_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="285" height="427" /> <p>Ha!! I wondered if anyone would pick up on that. </p> <p>But there were two problems. One, it was KILLING me. The last time I did this was last summer in the dining room and it wasn’t that bad. I don’t know if I’m getting old or what, but goodNESS. It was horrible. I even tried putting a travel pillow around my neck cause it. was. burning. It didn’t help. </p> <p>And then I noticed a teensy issue – the paint was SHINY. Now I know a shiny ceiling in the right room is pretty cool, but it’s not what I was going for. I like mine as flat as possible, not a lick of shine. But there it was: </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-xOEj-oA6_7A/URqFyB8FWFI/AAAAAAAAazI/1J7Ha2bgF10/s1600-h/photo1%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="shiny ceiling" border="0" alt="shiny ceiling" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-gWIhHU0zd10/URqFyuLACQI/AAAAAAAAazQ/KV0HSzZbnHg/photo1_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="290" height="387" /></a></p> <p>Ugh. So that, combine with the fact that the paint was not going to cover in one coat, <em>and</em> the pain in my neck -- all caused me to call the professionals. This room is just more than I can handle I guess. </p> <p>I’m SO glad I got help with it! It took two days and two coats and the second coat was the right sheen:</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-f8f9ccoxjg0/URqFzAVh1xI/AAAAAAAAazY/DoBnwHrDzU0/s1600-h/photo2%25255B12%25255D.jpg"><font color="#4c4c4c"></font><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="flat ceiling paint" border="0" alt="flat ceiling paint" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-hy5KVDlJ9dE/URqFz1JxkvI/AAAAAAAAazg/-Urt19OMtBI/photo2_thumb%25255B10%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="290" height="387" /></a></p> <p>I had color matched this color in a True Value paint, and it was flat, but they used an <strong>enamel</strong> base, which caused the sheen. Why they used enamel for a flat paint, I do not know. The second coat was a Sherwin Williams paint in flat. </p> <p>The color is called Nuance and is the lightest color on the paint chip that the Analytical Gray is on (that we used throughout a <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2012/07/pink-walls-begone.html">big portion of the house</a>). </p> <p>The new color is not quite white, it’s a light gray and I love it: </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-UXmLxU_pMY0/URqF0ORDhgI/AAAAAAAAazo/xGC2RG-gz58/s1600-h/IMG_4834%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="light gray ceiling" border="0" alt="light gray ceiling" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-s4GLn7OH-Tg/URqF0v1sMXI/AAAAAAAAazw/V9mCSfaTAdo/IMG_4834_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="400" height="599" /></a></p> <p>It still makes the crown pop but brightens up the room considerably. And many of you saw the other change in here – I took the ceiling fan down and replaced it with a <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/p/Hampton-Bay-Barcelona-Collection-3-Light-Rustic-Iron-Pendant-GVQ9713A-2/202800272#.US-o9bRmZUQ--">lantern</a> from Home Depot. The only time we use the fan is when I burn something in the oven, so I’m determined not to burn things anymore. Or I’ll just bring in the fan from the garage. ;)</p> <p>The fan just took up so much visual space, the lantern looks SO much better! And we actually use it – the fan cast the light down so it was harsh. This keeps it up so we turn on this one ALL the time now. </p> <p>Here’s an idea of how the darker ceiling looked before with the fan: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-VIG5JbWw-3I/URqF1DQWytI/AAAAAAAAaz4/TTibPChy2Kc/s1600-h/IMG_5686_thumb%25255B3%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="tan walls family room" border="0" alt="tan walls family room" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-q4QK2tbTp-E/URqF1r48W1I/AAAAAAAAa0A/FR-NR_ePk7s/IMG_5686_thumb%25255B3%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="298" /></a></p> <p>And here it is with those changed (and a few others a long the way too):</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-7sAy2h6Wti4/URqF2ErnztI/AAAAAAAAa0I/qpo7m-Bwt9A/s1600-h/IMG_4829%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="corner fireplace gray ceiling" border="0" alt="corner fireplace gray ceiling" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-26VlEk9qk3g/URqF2YIiBQI/AAAAAAAAa0Q/jtZA7GMvB5Y/IMG_4829_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="475" height="712" /></a></p> <p>Wow, what a difference, eh?? It feels SO much better to me in there now. The walls will eventually go to a color between Nuance and Analytical Gray, I haven’t decided what yet. So the walls will flow better with the ceiling eventually. </p> <p>For now, I’m glad it’s just done. Are you a painted ceiling fan? Or are you one of ceiling fans? What? I know many love a crisp white ceiling but for me it’s a little touch that I love to add to a space. Now I need to go clean out the oven so I don’t need that fan anymore. ;)</p>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781209617172261323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6566801726647592784.post-3586642428765627622013-11-03T22:30:00.000-08:002013-11-03T22:30:04.835-08:00Mirror Pure Pom dOr Twistable Free Standing Magnifying Mirror<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Mirror-Pure-Twistable-Standing-Magnifying/dp/B004HGGOF8%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAJ5DAUUMCL6FZ25KQ%26tag%3Dle0372-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB004HGGOF8"><img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41%2Bzvrjd70L._SL160_.jpg" /></a><br /><strong>Features</strong><br /><ul><li>Makeup Magnifying Mirror</li><li>Magnification 3 Times</li><li>Solid Brass Construction</li><li>Made in Italy</li><li>Finish/Color: Polished Chrome</li></ul><br />List Price: $814.29<br /><strong>Special Offer: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B004HGGOF8%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAJ5DAUUMCL6FZ25KQ%26tag%3Dle0372-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D386001%26creativeASIN%3DB004HGGOF8">check this out!</a></strong><p></p><p><strong>Product Description</strong><br />Makeup Magnifying Mirror. Hope you had a lovely weekend! The sun is just starting to peek out here and we have progress happening in basement bathroom as I write. We may have a potty down there by the end of the week! WHOO. HOO! :)</p> <p>Today I’m sharing a a few changes I made to the master bedroom. I started these projects last weekend and finished up a few little things yesterday. I’m in LOVE with the changes. It started with the mantel (yes, a mantel in the bedroom – one of those things I fought hubby on hard when we built the house and now I tell him how right he was) and grew from there (of course). </p> <p>I had my <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2009/05/wallpaper-art.html">wallpaper art</a> up there for years. I’m talking five or six years – that’s eons in this house: </p> <p><img title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_vswDWGRlsPw/TZpxknpzoRI/AAAAAAAAM44/QZrz3f1_jp4/after_thumb4.jpg?imgmax=800" width="400" height="597" /></p> <p>The accessories stayed the same for all those years too. I never changed them, ever. </p> <p>I got a wild hair a few months ago – and by a few I mean probably about eight? And I took the canvases down. That huge wall sat empty until I decided to try some Goodwill art I had bought years ago up there. </p> <p>I painted the frame months ago with leftover chalk paint, and just touched it up with some dark wax to bring out the detail: <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-wHvs6uHzhxw/URkeUvL4QQI/AAAAAAAAauE/XI37nf7go3A/s1600-h/IMG_4777%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="chalk paint frame" border="0" alt="chalk paint frame" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-p4JPVe-O5M0/URkeVIe8YtI/AAAAAAAAauM/PPv0vetXLpc/IMG_4777_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="320" height="479" /></a></p> <p>You can see the wax along the bottom, nothing on the side, just to see how it makes that detail pop. (This was before I buffed it down and cleaned it up a bit.) </p> <p>Like I said, I found the art at Goodwill forever ago. It had been sitting in the basement till I decided to try it up here. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea I’m sure, but I was oddly drawn to it. It’s kind of dark and broody, but I love the colors in it and the scene looks exactly like the street and building of our favorite restaurant in downtown Indy:</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-XahjaI_5Z5I/URkeVuqaAsI/AAAAAAAAauU/MEcxNN3tgoM/s1600-h/IMG_4803%25255B12%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="how to decorate a mantel" border="0" alt="how to decorate a mantel" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-z8xkC9yH06M/URkeWFGWkhI/AAAAAAAAauc/Hn-2KClfVKQ/IMG_4803_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="450" height="300" /></a></p> <p>It’s where we had one of our wedding receptions so it makes me think of that every time I see it. :)</p> <p>The piece is HUGE, and it was only $7.99 – it’s hard to find anything big enough to go over a mantel! I found accessories from around the house to decorate a bit:</p> <p align="center">  <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ehKbJ6VXqCU/URkeW_-p0mI/AAAAAAAAaug/H9GKto5EozU/s1600-h/IMG_4784%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="how to decorate a mantel" border="0" alt="how to decorate a mantel" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-N_JIbUcLFl8/URkeXACakiI/AAAAAAAAauo/uhjc6IqgEAg/IMG_4784_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="290" height="434" /></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-D8VRP7rbWa8/URkeXtikUWI/AAAAAAAAauw/sxN0wuLOu00/s1600-h/IMG_4785%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="how to decorate a mantel" border="0" alt="how to decorate a mantel" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Qd1-DYiukY0/URkeYod7I6I/AAAAAAAAau8/TVPWNr1A0p8/IMG_4785_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="285" height="437" /></a></p> <p>The marble bookends and that brass bowl were from the vintage mart I told you about <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2013/01/thrifting-heaven.html">here</a>. LOVE. </p> <p>I think it looks SO much better than before – there’s COLOR here now!: </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-hJrSay82fw4/URkeZERm9bI/AAAAAAAAavE/mVRY-KSj_cw/s1600-h/IMG_4786%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><font color="#4c4c4c"></font><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="how to decorate a mantel" border="0" alt="how to decorate a mantel" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-x-HUbqjBbYM/URkeZi106zI/AAAAAAAAavM/46XWPUpqAy8/IMG_4786_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="400" height="599" /></a></p> <p>Then, like always, I got inspired to move some other things around in the room. This spot by the fireplace has always had a chair and a little table: </p> <p><img title="buffalo check drapes " border="0" alt="buffalo check drapes " src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-5lMtXyEJlig/TgATQmnBo0I/AAAAAAAAN1E/17g_JYhhCUk/IMG_5279_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="320" height="507" /></p> <p>I sit in that chair every morning to do my makeup (and watch TV) so the angle was important – but the chair took up SO much space. (It was right by the side of the bed.) I started moving things around to see how it could work better and got a BRILL idea. </p> <p>I moved it to the other side of the room (I’ll share more about that soon) and brought up my little <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2012/03/have-settee.html">HomeGoods settee</a> and put it in that spot instead: </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Li_C8C8dvAA/URkeaSYko4I/AAAAAAAAavU/7dZb8MUwWAE/s1600-h/IMG_4810%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="gray gallery wall photos" border="0" alt="gray gallery wall photos" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-x-ieqy68e8g/URkea_JZBuI/AAAAAAAAavc/7_1lAAvtEPw/IMG_4810_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="380" height="569" /></a></p> <p>It was love at first sight. I was <em>so excited</em>. This settee is nice and deep, so it’s really comfy to sit on, but it’s flat against the wall so it takes up WAY less space. It feels like our bedroom is so much bigger now, I can’t believe it. </p> <p>I love how you can really see the pretty legs of my little gold table now too: </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Iqf3YyKa9vw/URkebpq6kCI/AAAAAAAAavk/H0MvDQNsL6E/s1600-h/IMG_4793%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="small settee " border="0" alt="small settee " src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-3r1irB1truw/URkecDQZe9I/AAAAAAAAavs/6x5g-13jGqE/IMG_4793_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="360" height="537" /></a></p> <p>I have even laid down on this to watch TV. By the fire. Seriously? It doesn’t get any better. </p> <p>The cats love it too, they cuddle up on it every night. :)</p> <p>The only thing I needed was a light (for makeup and reading) and the lamp I had there didn’t really fit. So I went to my favorite spot for sconces (Home Depot) and found this beauty: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-87KBZ50E5C4/URkeTg9RYoI/AAAAAAAAawk/4_vbjlqNaJ8/s1600-h/IMG_4801%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><font color="#4c4c4c"></font><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="small settee homegoods" border="0" alt="small settee homegoods" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-px6T4Qx5JBk/URkeULTQKmI/AAAAAAAAawo/phARrR5klJg/IMG_4801_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="360" height="565" /></a></p> <p>It comes so that it can easily be hardwired or plugged in – most of them I’ve purchased there are plug in. I thought that was a cool option. </p> <p>I moved the frames around a bit above the settee – I went up and over a little. The black was too much for me so I painted them a gray chalk paint that I already had (I used the CeCe Caldwell for this). I didn’t wax them so they stayed a lighter gray. </p> <p>I love the transformation and the bonus is I only spent on the new lamp, that’s it: </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-5AK1a_w0b7k/URked4OJxLI/AAAAAAAAav8/3sQN4ot7jFg/s1600-h/IMG_4806%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="gray green walls" border="0" alt="gray green walls" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-nvnHgphIdBg/URkeeWwzW6I/AAAAAAAAawE/AX1WSYSGHcI/IMG_4806_thumb%25255B10%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="496" height="745" /></a></p> <p>I still want to repaint the walls in here, but it will be a while. I was trying to decide between a dark color and light and after working in here again, I’m sure I want to go dark. I just love how warm and cozy and cocoon-like it feels! </p> <p>I still want to come up with some kind of treatment over the fireplace, but the perfect idea hasn’t come to me yet, so I wait. For now I’m thrilled with the small changes – I liked it before but it was getting so, well…<em>dark</em>: </p> <p align="center">  <img style="display: inline" title="" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_vswDWGRlsPw/TZpxknpzoRI/AAAAAAAAM44/QZrz3f1_jp4/after_thumb4.jpg?imgmax=800" width="285" height="421" /><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-bSUGhse1F7U/URkee7N39nI/AAAAAAAAawM/R-Y0ruXYfFA/s1600-h/IMG_4783%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="how to decorate a fireplace" border="0" alt="how to decorate a fireplace" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-XCXBEIlcC-I/URkegpvcxII/AAAAAAAAawU/LXEO9YhBSpE/IMG_4783_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="295" height="424" /></a> </p> <p>This feels so much cozier to me now, but brighter at the same time! </p> <p>Well, there you go, my adventures in switching stuff around – it was time in here. I’m not sure if that art will stay up there, but for now I love the change. I would normally never pick that piece for our home, but like I said, I just had this connection with it. Have you ever found old art that spoke to you? For $7.99 it was speaking to me <em>real</em> nice. ;) </p>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781209617172261323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6566801726647592784.post-44122042240658673722013-11-02T03:11:00.000-07:002013-11-02T03:11:00.511-07:00Ouch!Lan Lan would love to be taller than everyone else in the family!<br /><br />I didn't think it would happen since she currently stands less than five feet tall.<br /><br />BUT, she appears to have found a solution . . . .<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio9U9PYUWsrqaZa21pol7_dn4094oOSmXezkOjaQOOQyajyRV5E4UCbjrS1-y3lb6gO0_RrXmUtiRc7sllJ6FrwHF4le2GQ1k1yQ5vyJj8zZGcNj9KbkFAGkx1TaFJzdL6UZpeF9i7eXow/s1600/P1080711.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio9U9PYUWsrqaZa21pol7_dn4094oOSmXezkOjaQOOQyajyRV5E4UCbjrS1-y3lb6gO0_RrXmUtiRc7sllJ6FrwHF4le2GQ1k1yQ5vyJj8zZGcNj9KbkFAGkx1TaFJzdL6UZpeF9i7eXow/s320/P1080711.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEK-2KuNNUrDJUkhXNpxcHa2oHepjZIFU87qVhVuAZ43IKSB_KxlM5_LRYvnkumvfnJgszSY165iOj7LKXFbFXRpB601m8nlKdBF-tCwolXPYOftYH0zlQrRMLo0iaeYA5LGS4fU6PZ-aH/s1600/P1080713.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEK-2KuNNUrDJUkhXNpxcHa2oHepjZIFU87qVhVuAZ43IKSB_KxlM5_LRYvnkumvfnJgszSY165iOj7LKXFbFXRpB601m8nlKdBF-tCwolXPYOftYH0zlQrRMLo0iaeYA5LGS4fU6PZ-aH/s320/P1080713.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781209617172261323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6566801726647592784.post-29740315614677687052013-11-01T17:46:00.000-07:002013-11-01T17:46:00.812-07:00The French Reflection Petite Vanity Elegance Glass Base 91/2 Reversible Makeup Mirror Nickel 3X Optical<a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-French-Reflection-Elegance-Reversible/dp/B00DOKDOOM%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAJ5DAUUMCL6FZ25KQ%26tag%3Dle0372-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00DOKDOOM"><img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31WHRLzDaoL._SL160_.jpg" /></a><br /><strong>Features</strong><br /><ul><li>Magnifications: 3x, 5x, or 7x, - AND - 3x or 7x, each with Optically Ground Glass.</li><li>Reversible to 1x magnification.</li><li>The mirror glass is backed with pure silver.</li><li>Heavy and thick beautiful glass base, footed.</li><li>Solid Brass frame, heavily plated, can never rust, even in the most humid environment.</li></ul><br />List Price: $2,445.00<br /><strong>Special Offer: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00DOKDOOM%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAJ5DAUUMCL6FZ25KQ%26tag%3Dle0372-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D386001%26creativeASIN%3DB00DOKDOOM">check this out!</a></strong><p></p><p><strong>Product Description</strong><br />The mirror is 91/2" in diameter on a short frame, with a total height of just 123/4".
