February Before and After

Hey hey! It’s that time again – this first Monday of the month ALWAYS sneaks up on me, I always forget to remind you about this party. Dang.

I LOVE looking through all your posts and picking out some to share with the group every month, and yet again you did not disappoint. Let’s see what you’ve been up to…

Pam shared how they made and installed sliding barn doors for their basement family room:

DIY barn doors

Isn’t that awesome? And I’ll take that beautiful stone fireplace too…whenever.

The lovely Roeshel hit it out of the park with this chair makeover:

painted upholstered chair tutorial

First of all, you have to go check out how they started. Secondly, this brave woman PAINTED these chairs – and they look amazing.

Julie shared her kitchen before and afters here:

white kitchen sink window

I love the whole space, but this shot of that beautiful window, the rich wall color and bright cabs is my fave. :)

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that I was drawn to so many light and peaceful spaces this month – I always ooh and ahh over them this time of year. Lisa’s room is so serene and pretty, and I love how she updated that metal art above the sofa:

white slipcover

Aren’t they beautiful? You can see how she did it here.

I don’t decorate specifically for winter, but I loved Julie’s “winter” mantel:

winter mantel

She shopped her house and used what she had and it’s so fresh and pretty!

I HAD to include some organization, of course! I was inspired by Lena’s closet makeover. They used what was already there and added on to it to make the space more functional:

closet organization

I like this because they didn’t gut the room, they just made some simple changes. Our closet is such a disaster and I keep putting off making it work better because I feel like I need to start all over. This proves some simple changes will make a big difference.

I was smiling over Jessica’s simple change to her kitchen:

taking doors off cabinets

She took the doors off some cabinets and painted the back a fun, bright color – I LOVE it! And that chalkboard is adorable too.

And finally, but certainly not least, because I have mud rooms on the brain, I loved Bette’s before and after in her laundry/mud room:

mudroom storage

All of that storage makes a girl just plain GIDDY. Ugh, I LOVE IT.

Now I can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to so far in 2013! Please, only link up projects that you have completed, not inspiration posts. And if you’d like to be considered for next month’s round up, please link back in your post. You can copy and paste this code for a quick link:

Within reach (organizing the paper)

Hey hey! Thanks for all the love on my blue buffet in the foyer yesterday! If you try out the color send me a pic of what you do! ;)

I told you last week that I’m on a mission to get clutter control around here – one little project at a time. Today I’m sharing a little purchase that has already helped me a ton. We’ll see if I can keep it up. :)

Anyone remember that post about the PAPER and how I had come up with an idea to keep it contained and organized in my house? Well, that’s SOOOO not happening anymore. It was a nice few months. I am a piler, I’m embracing my piling and I’m proud of it!!

OK, not proud at all.

The paper is really my biggest clutter foe in our house. It’s mostly contained downstairs, usually in the kitchen and the office. OH, and the CAR. Oh. The car.

I’ve tried a few different methods and I finally succumbed to the fact that I just suck at organizing the paper that comes into our house. I know, I’ve heard the whole ‘touch it once thing’ -- I tried that for a few days and then laughed and laughed because it just wasn’t happening.

Anyway, it ends up in piles like these in my office:

wow

That whole box is full by the way – that’s why there’s a stack on top, duh.  ;)

And then there’s the desk pile:

desk clutter

Honestly? That pile is not usually a pile. Usually it’s just spread out over the desk. And then that sweet kitty up there (looking so innocent) ends up swiping half of them off the desk onto the floor. She thinks it’s fun. I think she needs a new hobby.

Thing is, my desk doesn’t have a lick of storage. That’s what you get when you use an old farmhouse table as a desk. I love how large it is, so I’m happy to trade storage for the large surface. Also, we keep our file cabinet downstairs in hubby’s office. There’s just more room down there and we’ve had it in the basement for years, even before we finished it.

So I realized a couple months ago that I don’t have a spot handy to put paperwork that needs to be filed. I sit at my desk, go through the paper and mail, sort it into piles (recycle, shred, to do, file) and then it seems nine times out of ten at least a couple of those piles seem to just sit on the desk. And then the next day I’ll put something else on it, and then again, and then the sorted pile isn’t sorted anymore and I needed to stop. the. madness.

So I found this at Staples:

wall file holder martha stewart

Isn’t it so pretty? It’s just a small hanging file folder from the Martha Stewart line, I think it was $5.99? I had never seen that line of supplies until recently and it was heavenly.

I added some labels with my label maker that usually has hearts fluttering out of it (because I love it so):

wall file holder

And I wanted to put it within reach – where I could just file away stuff as I sat at my desk. Thing is, the spot where my desk sits isn’t really conducive to doing that – it’s all windows.

So I went under the window:

wall file holder

I’m a function over form girl most of the time, but I gotta admit I wondered if it would look goofy there. But you really can’t see it:

wall file holder

It’s mostly hidden by the drapes (that I just move aside when I need to access it) and I have to say, I think the little pop of color hiding out is kind of fun.

I don’t notice it when I walk in the room, that’s for sure:

board and batten walls

Now, when it gets full (like now), I can just take a big pile of paper down and file it. That and the to do pile are no longer on my desk all the time, which is HUGE to me.

Now…we’ll see if it works. Most times when I try to keep the paper corralled it works great for a few months and then I get lazy. If I made resolutions I’d make one to keep the paper under control. But I don’t…so I won’t. ;) But I will TRY.

What are your paper organization tricks? Any simple solutions that help you out?

Spring cleaning time (giveaway!)

**This giveaway is now closed. The winner has been contacted via email.

Hello all! Happy FRIDAY! It is just beauuuutiful here today and it makes me happy. Dare I say it -- I think spring is finally here to stay! Mother Nature has been in a MOOD, for real. Now let’s hope we don’t jump right into 90 degree temps.

This giveaway is coming just in time for spring cleaning – ‘tis that time of year for organizing, cleaning and decrapifing the house! I can’t help you too much with the decrapification, but I can help you with the cleaning part. (No, I’m not helping you clean, nice try.)

My friend Bonnie introduced me to Shaklee products years ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. I LOVE THIS STUFF. I’m not just saying that either – if I say it I mean it and I’m saying it so I mean it. Got it?

shaklee-logo

After trying the products for the first time I ended up going through our cleaning supply stash and donating most of what we had because the Shaklee stuff took the place of it.

I have tried nearly everything at this point, but two of my very favorites are the dish washer detergent, which I keep next to the sink in a pretty bowl:

dishwash detergent in bowl

I gotta make stuff pretty if I can, it’s a sickness. ;) Two little scoops for each load, that’s it.

And the amazing Basic H cleaning concentrate – it has lasted me FOREVER:

shaklee

I was hesitant to try these products at first because I assumed they would be so expensive, but I can’t stress to you enough how long the basics last – I’ve had this bottle of concentrate for years now. And every time I say that I wonder if people think I clean my house – I do. Sometimes. Seriously, you just need a 1/4 teaspoon to mix up a whole bottle and it lasts forEVA.

I think I’m going on three years with one bottle of concentrate? (It was $12 I think?) And it cleans pretty much everything you can imagine – I usually do a slightly bigger dose of the concentrate for the “degreasing” version and use it on counters, mirrors, windows, appliances, sinks…everything.

I started using these products when the Bub was younger and I was honestly surprised they work so well – I expected the more “natural” items (no harmful fumes or hazardous chemicals) to not work as well. Not sure why, I just had that thought in my head, but I was proven wrong and have been a fan since.

Bonnie shares some great cleaning tips over at her blog, and this recent post shows how well the products work. (I forgot about the Scour Off on the oven – it’s awesome and smells. SO. good.)

I’m super excited about this giveaway because one of you will get a whole Get Clean Starter Kit that includes the following:

Basic H2® Organic Super Cleaning Concentrate, 16 oz. (1)
Germ Off Disinfecting Wipes, 35 Wipes (1)

Threshold in the foyer

threshold items target

Well hello all! Hope your weekend was lovely!! I’m pleased to say the basement storage room is organized and CLEAN and there is no sign of the mice! WHOO HOO! It took forever, seriously. I’m sure I’ll share it’s organized bliss with you soon.

Today I’m kicking off a fun little shindig I’ve got going…I’m pinching myself because I’m partnering up with Target over the next few months to show off some of their new items in the Threshold line. Have you seen it? Do you LOVE it?? Of course you do, it’s awesome. (And I’m not just saying that, I’ve been drooling over it for months.)

Target calls this line of decor a “casual-traditional look” and when I read that I was like – bingo, that’s my style! That may explain why I like it so much. You’ve probably seen the brand popping up for the past few months, but it’s about to get even better!

They challenged us to spruce up the foyer this month and I’m so stinkin’ happy with how it turned out! You may remember how I changed up the black buffet in our entryway to the beautiful aubusson blue last month:

aubusson blue chalk paint

I think that was one of the best decorating decisions I’ve ever made by the way – it makes SUCH a statement now.

Well there’s an area off the the right of that buffet that I consider still part of our foyer, but it’s an odd little spot. It’s right by the stairs, kind of in the dining area, but it’s still part of the entry into the house.

It’s one of those spots I’ve struggled with for years now. Over the past year or so I’ve had a settee and a wall of old vintage windows on the wall, but with the blue on the dresser the settee looked all wrong, so it got moved up to the master bedroom.

I had an idea to lighten up the spot and replace it, and I started with a trip to Target. Who doesn’t? :) I knew I wanted a little bench or stool, so I headed to this aisle:

target benches

I loved this dark brown one – it was uber sophisticated and had TONS of storage space inside:

But it was too big and a little too dark for what I was going for.

I also loved this one, with the dark wood legs and the tufted top:

It had storage too, that seat lifted up! But it was too modern for what I wanted.

THEN. I found her. The one:

She’s a she cause of her pretty little (short) legs and tufted top and of course…nail head trim. Add in plenty of storage inside and I was in luuurve.

I brought her home with me and then started a little redo to finish off the spot. I grabbed a chair I bought at Goodwill eons ago that has been sitting in our closet:

how to recover a chair seat

I painted it and recovered the seat forever ago and my plan was that it would be a nice little spot to sit to put on shoes or socks in our closet. Instead it became a spot to pile purses and clothes on three feet high sooooo…it came out.

It’s SO easy to recover a seat like this! If you haven’t attempted it I promise you can do it! Just cut your fabric down so it’s big enough to wrap around the edges and then start stapling:

how to recover a chair

I usually start on one side, staple, go to the other side, staple, and work my way around, pulling the fabric tight as I go.

The corners get a ton of staples – start with one:

how to recover a chair

And then staple the heck out of it to get a nice little corner:

how to recover a chair

Remember, NO ONE will see it. I promise. Unless they’re a freakity freak who looks under your chairs. But then do you really want them in your house anyway? Staple away.

I used the fabric to trim out the drapes in our living room near this spot, so pulling it over to this area worked out perfectly! I added one of my placemat pillows that used to sit on the settee, and I LOVE how it came together:

how to recover a chair

Yes, that was a placemat – I filled it up and then sewed a button in the middle to give it a little tuft. :)

I had been eyeing this Threshold mirrored tray like mad every time I went in to Target, so I finally picked it up for this spot:

round mirror tray target

Love it!

I’m not big into the decorating with bugs trend – like the vintage prints I see for example. I think they are beautiful but also think it would freak me out to have them in my house. This little votive holder I couldn't resist though:

bug votive

You only see really see the image when there’s a candle inside, I just thought it was cool and I loved the bright yellow. (I used an LED votive in mine.)

I like using things differently from their intended purpose, so I used a blue votive holder and a green glass as vases:

entry decorating ideas

It was all coming together beautifully, I was SO happy. But those vintage windows hanging above were just feeling so heavy. That wall has always stumped me because it’s big but I couldn’t do a mirror (there’s one above the buffet), I couldn’t do a gallery wall (one on the staircase right next to it). So what the heck do you put there that’s big but not heavy feeling?

I looked over above the sofa at my DIY painting and knew it would be PERFECT!:

entry decorating ideas

It was too small for above the sofa anyway, so this works out even better. (And now the wall above the sofa is now completely empty, but I’m OK with it. For a while.)

I LOVE how it pulls in the color of the buffet – it was like it was meant to be!:

foyer decorating ideas

Crazy.

I don’t move furniture around much in this house but the accessories and art get moved around constantly.

Now it’s so much calmer in this spot – it works well with the area to the left and with the stairs…I felt like it was all fighting before:

entry decorating ideas

We’ve moved most of the Bub’s toys to the basement, but I did keep some of them up in this bench. Things like foam swords that him and his buddies need quickly when they’re playing outside. You don’t how how often I hear “MOMMA, I need my swords!!”

It happened just the other day because we’ve had some days that feel like spring is here…they are brief but they get me excited. I love how bright this spot is now, and that there is so much color!

entry decorating ideas

Funny how our tastes change. Six years ago this would all have been red and black. Five years from now it may be all white. But for now I’m a big fan of color in our home, it makes me happy. Especially this time of year!

So are you getting the spring bug yet? Do you decorate differently when the temps start to warm up? Are you obsessed with the Threshold line at Target too? Here’s a little tidbit – the full line isn’t even out yet! It will all be released in March and I cannot wait to see what else they have in store! (In store…get it? Har.) So do you like my Threshold items in my threshold?

OK, I’m done. :)

Hope

I am spending the weekend with my parents.  I was reading through The Best Loved Poems of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and found this lovely delight.

Hope is the Thing with Feathers
Emily Dickinson

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.
