Home Depot video shoot

Hello all! First of all, I have to send out prayers to those in Oklahoma. We are just seeing all the news this morning and it’s heartbreaking.

I’m back today with a recap of the recent Home Depot video shoot at my house. When they contacted me about doing a video in the backyard a couple months ago I was all, sure, that sounds like fun! I don’t have to leave my house, low stress right?

Well then I realized I was doing interviews for three hours and the nerves started to creep in. ;) I gotta say, in the end it was actually a really fun day and I feel like it went pretty well. (Everyone else said so too, but I’m still not sure if they’re supposed to say that or what.)

The promotion was set up so that I could chat with about 15 other bloggers via the phone while I was taped. We were talking about the new Procter and Gamble cleaning items at Home Depot specifically -- they are great for outdoor grime and dirt. The bloggers and I talked about getting your outdoor spaces ready for the season and some fun entertaining ideas.

I’ll share one of the videos with you soon (I haven’t seen any yet – yikes!!) but for now I wanted to share what went into the shoot. It was mind boggling! The production crew came a couple weeks earlier to check out the house and patio, and when six guys walked in I started to realize what a big deal this was. ;)

The day of the shoot we had more like ten crew members and then the producer from NYC (thanks Evan!) and the PR contact from Chicago (hey Mara!). They were super efficient but still took a couple hours:

video shoot

There were monitors and cords and stuff everywhere! It was insane! (In a fun way!)

Here’s a better view of the kitchen:

video shoot

Thank goodness for the new, bigger kitchen table. ;) There’s no way all of that would have fit on the old one.

Speaking of, the old one served as our food station – both breakfast and lunch were catered in, ohh la la!:

Having the food brought in was actually a huge relief to me. All along I had been planning on feeding everyone and that was a huge thing I didn’t have to worry about that day.

The patio was as crazy as the inside – they moved everything around so the fireplace was the focal point:

video shoot

We had a beautiful, sunny day so the big screen was up to offer some shade for the shoot – I asked if they would leave it and they said no, dangit. :)

My sis was there for the day, thank goodness! It was a relief to have her there to help me prepare and just for support. She got a bunch of pics while I was getting prepped for the shoot:

Nice face:

I have to say, EVERYONE was awesome -- the crew, Evan, Mara – they all made it fun and it was surprisingly laid back, which is good for me. I feel comfortable in front of a camera and have done it numerous times in my life (both for blogging and in my previous life in PR), but if everyone is stressed and hyper it makes me nervous.

It was quite fun and even though I was nervous, I was way more relaxed than I thought I would be. I didn’t mess up too bad – except for the time I kept saying “cucumber” instead of couponer – over and over. And over. It didn’t help that I’d also hear everyone inside through my earpiece cackling every time I said it. :)

You know how you say something wrong a couple times and then your brain just quits on you and you just CANNOT say it right after that? Yeah. I think it took six tries before I got it.

Oh well, everyone needs some outtakes right??

It was a fun day and we flew through the interviews – the crew was packed up and the house was back to normal by mid-afternoon. It was a blast and I couldn’t have done it without my sister there with me:

thrifty decor chick

Love her. :)

The lovely folks at Procter and Gamble and Home Depot have put a little giveaway package together for one of you to win! You’ll get all the items I talked about that day – the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Outdoor Pro pack, Mr. Clean Outdoor Pro spray, a roll of Bounty paper towels and a $50 Home Depot gift card!

P&G Outdoor Cleaning Pack

WHOOT! I have already tried the cleaning supplies and they rock! Anyone else obsessed with the Magic Erasers? Love them. And with the gift card you can kick off Memorial Day right with some flowers from Home Depot, or maybe some outdoor pillows? Hope the winner does something fun with it! :)

**This giveaway is now closed – the winner has been contacted.

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment here. Remember if you are anonymous, leave your email as well! This will be open through Thursday at noon.

Start small

Well THANK YOU for all the comments on my mouse post. :) I’m serious, it helps that I’m not the only one who has dealt with it. I mean, I knew we weren’t the only ones, but it helps to hear that I’m not the only person who was completely overwhelmed with the situation and the messes they left behind.

I’m about a third of the way through the storage room clean up so far but I’m at least through the worst of it (I think), so that’s encouraging.

So speaking of conquering messes, you know how you look around some days and all the sudden it feels like NOTHING is organized, everything is out of it’s place, things are overflowing everywhere? OK, maybe it’s just my house. ;)

Well it feels like that around here lately, and without fail it happens when life is crazy – we’ve had so much going on over the past few weeks that I feel like I’m playing catch up in the house.

I mentioned last month I’m determined to get the house better organized this year, one little project at a time. The thing is, I feel like we’re thisclose to truly having a place for everything (OK, well that’s just crazy – most everything) in this house. The new basement cubbies are a HUGE step in that direction. But I have storage projects to finish up in the basement bathroom, the laundry room, the dining/library – and of course the storage room. It’s like I can’t get one spot just right until I get another one just right, you know?

So it gets overwhelming – I’m only one person and can only tackle so many projects and decrapify so much in one day. :) The other day I walked by a spot in our family room for the 50th time that week and decided I just needed to start somewhere. It was just a little mess but at least it was something!

I told you about my slight magazine/catalog obsession here – and I’ve been much better about them since! MUCH. Well, you may not think so after this photo, but really, I have:

ugh

We have a little Target basket on the subwoofer in the family room (an effort to hide it a bit) for magazines. Well, we started adding more than magazines – like school papers, books, random mail and of course, a treasure box. Why not?

So I went after it. I tackle big messes the same way every time. Sit on the floor and make piles. I’m a piler, but sometimes that’s a good thing. ;)

I started sorting them out – there was a TON of stuff in there (and spilling out the sides), but keep in mind it had built up for the past six months or so:

organizing the clutter

Lego books went to the basement, the Bub’s books and workbooks went upstairs, the trash went to recycling, shred stuff to the shredder, and my small “keep” pile too. Believe it or not, I hadn’t read some of the magazines in there. ;)

And of course, there’s that I-don’t-know-what-to-do-with-you pile. I hate that pile. But I always make one just so I can get through it all quick. I address that one after the rest is put away.

What’s funny is it took no time at all – maybe 30 minutes or so? Now the only things in the magazine basket are -- get ready for this…magazines!:

magazine basket

OK, and catalogs. I can’t quit them.

Isn’t that a beautiful sight? So clean and decluttered and you can almost see the bottom!

It was just a little spot, but getting it in order cleared up my mind a LOT:

magazine basket

Paper and magazines and mail and booklets and manuals continue to be my biggest clutter issue. I’m making progress, slow but sure. What’s your’s?

Now, you’ll find me in the basement for the next few hours. I power on!!

Need A Gift For A Teen?

Need a gift for a teen?

One of my all-time favorites is a Slumber Party Kit.

Take a basket, add a movie (or movie tickets), then microwave popcorn, drinks, and big boxes of candy (teens LOVE food!).  Go to the dollar store and buy light sticks/glow-in-the-dark bracelets.  Add a deck of cards.

If you want to make it bigger, add a fuzzy blanket or some fun socks.  For girls add spa-type stuff (face mask, nail polish, lotion), or for boys add things like a whoppie cushion, yo-yo, or Nerf football.

Guaranteed to please.

Indy girls

Hello all! First of all, I am sending out love and prayers to those in Boston this week. I am at a loss for words regarding what happened – I just don’t understand the evil.

I’m glued to the TV as I prepare for my presentation at the SNAP! Conference in Utah this week – I’m looking forward to meeting some of my west coast blogging friends while I’m there! (I’m only there for a day so I can get home to an event Friday morning – flying all night long Thursday night!)

The conference got me thinking – there are SO many talented bloggers in Utah, it’s crazy. Up till a few years ago I felt like there’s only a handful of bloggers here in Indiana, but now you are coming out of the woodwork and I LOVE it!

Today I decided I would show off a few of the Indiana bloggers I know of – I’m sure I’m missing some. Give props to my fellow Hoosiers, yo.

First up is Laurie at Laurie Jones Home. Her house is just beautiful, I especially loved her recent dining room update

board and batten with dark walls

Isn’t that gorgeous? Looks like a magazine! I love that deep color on the walls.

Chelsea at Two Twenty One is an IU girl (I’m a fan by osmosis – I’m a Ball State grad but my sis, bff and hubby are IU alums) and her recent home office makeover is one of my favorites:

bright ikea office

So darn pretty and bright! Love it!

Of course, I have to include my girl Beckie – we met years ago and have been friends since. She’s a crafty goddess and her new craft room is fantastic:

built ins craft room

All that storage is glorious! Did I mention she built it herself?

Jessie at Imperfectly Polished shares some great projects but I think her foyer is my favorite:

blue board and batten

It’s unusual that you see color on the trim and white walls – it’s exactly what I’m planning for the mud room and I love it!

Prepare yourself for the gorgeous master bath over at Sweet Chaos:

luxury master bathroom

I met Carolyn and her friend Valerie years ago at Home Goods – she tells the story well here. ;) Turns out we go way back and didn’t realize it, and the weirdness keeps happening cause one of her friends is now the Bub’s teacher. We were MEANT to connect, obviously.

I met Kerry at Home Crush Blog a few weeks ago at the vintage mart meet up – it’s SO nice to meet local bloggers and readers! She does an amazing job at accessorizing – check out her beautiful built ins:

decorating a bookcase

She also shares some really yummy recipes here.

Liz from Hoosier Homemade is the queen of beautiful cupcakes:

flowerpot cupcakes

She makes me want to bake, seriously. Look at how adorable they are!

I met Julia at Sunbeam Yellow at the vintage mart too – she’s taking a break from blogging right now but I loved her video makeup reviews. She shares some DIY and crafty goodness too!

I’m sure I’m forgetting a bunch of Hoosier bloggers, so if you are one, feel free to share a link in the comments! I apologize if I missed you! I’m off to try to finish up a DIY project before I start packing (at midnight tonight – procrastinate is my middle name.)

Acupuncture?

I've been trying to catch up on all the things that slipped by the side during the school year.  Blogging is one I missed the most, and I have a whole lotta action I keep wanting to post about.

So, I thought it would be fun to do a post-a-day in July.  Sounds like fun.  Yes?

For today.  Another of Patrick's quotable quotes.

Patrick, came downstairs, hopping on one foot and scowling. "Owww!  I just stepped on a tack!!!  DUDE, that HURT!"

He sat on the couch, pulling up his foot and examining the tiny pinprick.

Quickly recovering, he looked over at me, smiled, and said, "You know Mom, if you think about it, stepping on a tack is kinda like acupuncture!  For free!"

So, the next time you step on a Lego or a Barbie shoe in the middle of the night, instead of fuming, consider it acupuncture.  For free!

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve party at the bowling alley, including free bowling, food and video games.  It doesn't get any sweeter than that!  Thank you J. Family!!!

Then church (I am sorry to say I did not get a picture of all my children dressed up!)

The Christmas Elf bypassed pjs this year and brought Disney shirts instead!

Here is what our tree looked like at 2am Christmas morning.  That is the time Mr. and Mrs. Santa went to bed.  I think Mei Mei was still awake, she was SO excited!

At this point the house was very quiet, peaceful and CLEAN.

What you don’t see

Hey hey! I finally finished up taking down and putting away all of the Christmas decor yesterday and it feels soooo good to get it out! I love it, you know I do, but come the new year it needs to be gone.

There is still the outdoor decor, but it’s dang cold out and we have a thick layer of snow, so who knows when that will happen.

As I was gathering up the Christmas over the past few days I noticed a few glaring things in our house that I thought I would share. It’s a new year and throughout this next year I hope to continue to show you the fun, pretty stuff in our home. But if you’ve been around for awhile you know I don’t shy away from showing the not so pretty sometimes too.

We are a real family and live in a real house and that means real messes and real things that go wrong… and in the land of blogs sometimes it’s hard to remember that the perfectly styled pics are just that – perfectly styled. ;)

Here’s the low down on just a few of the things that need to be fixed around here…

I think it was three years ago that we thought we had a leak in an upstairs bathroom – we thought so because this happened to the family room ceiling:

Turns out it wasn’t a leak, the protective little jobby I had on the tub faucet (when the Bub was little) had been turned upside down, so when the water came out of the faucet it was flowing right back up into the wall.

It was just one time but it did some decent damage to the ceiling. We have to have the tape removed, retape the drywall and then have the ceiling retextured. It gives me a headache just thinking about it, so it’s sat there. Hung there?

Speaking of that ceiling, it’s getting a paint job asap – the color is driving me NUTTY. And so are all the tiny holes and non-caulked joints on all of the crown in that space:

crown molding corners

I put up the crown a year or two ago and if you’ve done crown molding, you know it can be a royal pain in the patoot. Getting back up on the ladder to fill those holes, caulk the joints and paint it all has been at the bottom of a verrrry long list.

And yes, you can totally tell it when you look at it. This still does not light a fire under me. :)

The drapes in our family room have been unlined with a rough edge since I hung them up years ago. It’s just fabric clipped up:

I’ve now convinced myself that I like it that way. It adds texture…so I say. ;)

Remember that Pottery Barn rug that I saved for and waited patiently for it to go on sale before I brought it home and LOVED it?:

pottery barn jute rug

Well the dog loved it too:

You can’t tell how big it is there but that is a HUGE hole in my pretty rug. I just keep stuffing the loose ends back into the hole to try to hide it. Of course an open, glass coffee table does nothing to help disguise it, but whatever, I am keeping this rug. :)

Our master bath is a room that’s gotten very little updating – I painted soon after we moved in and threw a frame up around the mirror:

maple bathroom cabinets

But it’s almost nine years are starting to show – both of our sinks leak unless we put the handle in just the perfect position, and both of our stoppers are broken:

The leak and stopper happened in one sink, and within two weeks it happened to the other. My plan has always been to replace the faucets entirely, so it will wait till then.

Our tub looked decent a few months ago:

beadboard tub surround

Well, we thought we had a leak (again) but it wasn’t a leak (again) – but we didn’t find that out till the plumber took the side of the tub off just to find nothing was wrong:

beadboard tub surround

I installed the beadboard so that the panels could still be taken off, and it worked great, but I now I need to reinstall the trim and paint over all the new caulk.

And remember when I did all that tile around the tub years ago?

Well, someone (me) never caulked around the bottom of said tile and water got splashed up under it one day and leaked down into the laundry room walls and made a new mess:

IMG_4312

I was thrilled that day when I saw the drywall bubbling up, let me tell you. Good things: the leak we thought was a leak wasn’t a leak, I just need to caulk the tile (!!!), and there’s no damage to the electrical stuff because of the water. Bad news: I have drywall repairs and lots of painting to do.

Did I mention this all happened months ago? Yeahhhh.

Speaking of the laundry room, I still don’t have the beadboard painted or the baseboards down:

black beadboard

It’s been like this since I installed those peel and stick tiles a year ago. I wanted to wait till the washer and dryer were moved out to start this redo and I need to figure out a plan for the new mud room built ins before I can finish up the beadboard. So…it sits. Without baseboards.

And finally, the doozy. This one may make you shed a tear, it almost did me. Remember our beautiful pergola on the deck?:

sears gazebo night

Sigh.

After some nasty, fierce winds and a couple snow storms it now looks like this:

Yeah, I took that through the window, remember it’s cold out there!

And yeah, it’s AWFUL. Sucks, royally. It didn’t do any damage to the deck, thankfully. This just happened recently and every time we get ready to go take it apart, it snows six more inches or the temps drop down under 30 degrees, so we haven’t been able to clean it up yet. It made it through plenty of winds and snow last winter and spring, it was just too intense this time I guess.

It makes me just sick to look at it. I don’t know what we’ll do to replace it this year…time will tell.

So anyway, there’s a look at the not-so-good around our house. It’s not stuff I actively hide by the way, I don’t edit my photos or anything like that – if you look hard enough you’ll see a lot of it. ;)

And no, I’m not complaining. This is part of owning a home and I’m thankful for it. Every once and awhile I just like to show that our house is far from pretty all of the time.

Be kind to me…I did accomplish all of this and more last year! ;)
